Sorry, Yep!
I have been talking about the Fiesta racecar today, and associated gearboxes for a Zetec/CVH hybrid!

I meant MT 75 not MTX 75!

Hmmmm gotta agree!
The type 9 is almost certainly the gearbox you have in your car and not the MT 75.

How do i tell if i have a type N (9) gearbox in my S3?

According to the bible MT 75 was fitted with all the 2.9 engines or is there exceptions? Or have i misread?

If all MT75s have the same gate arrangement as in my mondeo then reverse is down and to the right below 5th and you pull a collar up to select reverse. The reverse on a type n is up and to the left and you select it by pushing the gear stick down and away from you.

I have never seen an MT 75 fitted to an 'S'. That is not to say they never did fit them though.

The main differences between an MT 75 and a Type 9 (or N) is (a) Type 9 has a longer tailshaft (b) MT 75 is wider than a Type 9. (c) The real visible difference is that a Type 9 has a removeable bellhousing, (from the gearbox end as well as from the engine side) Wheras the MT 75 gearbox is cast as one piece with an integral bellhousing which just bolts to the back of the engine in the usual way.

P.S. I suspect that your Mondeo has the MTX 75, which is a completely different gearbox for front wheel drive.

You don't say

The point was the guy could tell what gearbox he had by where the reverse gear was as, as far as I'm aware, all MT75 (incl the MTX75) gearboxes have reverse below 5th and type Ns have reverse next to 1st.

Here's a picture of a mt75 gearbox...
www.smethley.freeserve.co.uk/gearbox.html
...you can see the reverse gate collar on the gearstick. Editted to add: I guess to fit in a tvr you could do away with the collar and the reverse gate lock thing as this guy did for his westfield (having read the text) but the reverse would still be in the same place.

Here's a picture of the type N gearbox from my car (minus bell housing)...

Ahhhh! The penny has dropped. I'll read what's written in future as opposed to what I think is written!

Jas.

P.S. I was right about them differences though!!!

Oddly, the haynes manual for the granada list EP oil for a type n gearbox and atf oil for an mt75... arghh!

I'll go with the bloke who rebuilt my gearbox for me and stick with atf oil. If it blows up I'll let you all know but right now it running better than it ever has done.

Ofcourse you could use a Borg Warner T5 box!! (Griff,Chimers,Cosworth Escort or Sierra)Even found a bell housing manufacturer who makes 2.9 (or 4.0L!!)to T5. Superior in every way. Just a thought.

Depends which edition. The latest double the size version goes into the gearbox saga a bit more. The MT75 should have been the gearbox but TVR didn't like the ratios and kept with the old Type 9 despite Ford telling me they have nver supplied the 2.9 with that box. there are a few MT75 cars but whether they are factory originals or refits I don't know.

Thanks for all the information guys.

Mark, the photos were a great help. Yesterday I printed them off, put the S3 on ramps and had a good look at the box, well the best I could anyway. It does seem to me that I do have a type 9 box. But, I am still a little confused about which is the correct oil. ATF does seem to be the favourite though, but I will try and do a little more research.

Steve, thanks for clearing up my Bible query. I rechecked the gearbox section at the weekend, and I was beginning to wonder what the hell was going on – my Bible must be an early addition.

Once again many thanks for all the information,

Melvin
