Christmas proved useful, just some more cooling system fettling, brake pipes to make and then body back on, see if it starts!

I'm still playing with configurations for the fans and radiator, which are Subaru items. I have twin fans but I don't really know if it actually requires both. What do you guys think?

I would have thought that with new a cooling system throughout (including water pump and heater matrix), plus a 45mm deep WRX radiator, everything should be as efficient as it can be.

Given that it got along fine with a single fan it might not need twin fans. If I do run two fans I guess I would need to add a second relay. What have other folk done when using the Scooby set up?

I've used a Scooby rad on my S3C for two years now: my impression is that it gives much more cooling capacity than the original (though that was probably partly clogged on both water and air sides). It is a bit prone to fin damage, though: use kid gloves!

I'm using it with the original frame and fan, which fitted with no problem at all.

If you do use 2 x fans you will need a seperate relay and fuse for each one, just as you thought

Depends on current rating of fans and relay and whether you want them coming on together or staged?

My S3 still runs a standard radiator with the original single fan in front with no issues.

Scorchy hot day, stuck in a jam on the M25, fan cut in and out and temperature was fine smile

Thanks guys, that's good to hear. I think I'll give it a go with one fan, looks much neater and no worries about adding relays.

Increasing the fan size or area doesn't make a huge difference to cooling - you get diminishing returns for increased air flow. What makes more difference is hot air recirculation - 10% hot air recirculation essentially takes 10% straight off your cooling capacity, so if you find the cooling system is marginal that's the place to focus your efforts.

I've ducted the front of my rad out to the front grill, which leaves me with a bay on either side of the rad which I use for cold air intake and oil cooler. Unless you're putting out more heat than normal none of that is necessary though. But it's possible with relatively little effort if you're interested.

If you have multiple fans there's nothing to stop you from using a single relay and/or fuse (as long as they're rated appropriately) but separate relay and fuse avoids a single point of failure. Obviously your single fan already has a single point of failure so that's nothing to be especially concerned about, but given a free choice you'd separate them to gain redundancy.

This is the route I chose with two fans...

Two fans, two circuits, two relays. I find I only really need the second fan if I'm stuck in traffic on a very hot day.

Excellent setup and the route I can take if I find one fan insufficient, thanks.

Inching closer. I got set up but it took me all day. I'm planning to drop it into place on Sunday, fingers crossed it still fits!

I see a lot of these cars in, and quite a few that have been worked on in people's garage at home, or on their drive. I normally prepare to suck through my teeth, cos honestly some of those cars are a state! Despite the owner thinking they're mint.

But that car there? Hats off to you! I can tell a good job when I see one, and that's screaming that it's been carried out properly. Looks great!

Thanks, I think that usually it doesn't make economic sense to do them properly so people don't.

I was the same when I started messing with old cars 40 years ago until I realised it was often cheaper in the long run to do it the right way.

So rather than stuffing filler into old MGs I would replace a panel, if the engine was out for a clutch change I would do the core plugs and main seals etc.

The other critical bit is paying for a professional when you run out of talent - in my case welding and painting the chassis!

Hi

Just bought an S1 in need of considerable love an attention. I see some of you guys are local and I really could do with some advice as it needs a body off restoration plus a lot more. I live in Lymm but the car is at my works in Irlam. Anyone free one day/night/weekend to Bob round and give me some advice.

Car looks better in photo than it iactually is.

Hi

Just bought a bit of a basket case 1988 S1, everything is poor on it, outriggers are completely rotten and missing mainly, so fear the worse for the rest of the chassis. Interior is poor, needs new windscreen and hood, clutch solid at pedal. Bodywork terrible.

I’m a complete novice, just love the gurgle of the TVR, so bought one. It’s going to need a body off restoration, looking for good advice on what I should do and replace whilst I do, and really need someone I can turn to for advice and maybe get the engine running so I can sit and listen to that to keep me motivated.

Maybe bit off more than I can chew with this, but at least I can say I own a TVR. I don’t have a lot of spare cash so this is a slow burner, don’t mind hard work and can put my hand to most things, welding etc.

Car is in Irlam, near Trafford park in the warehouse where I work.

Any help much appreciate.

Welcome to the world of S ownership.
Sounds like you have a big project on your hands there.
As a starter it may be helpful to have a look at the “useful links” section above. I think there are links to some body off restorations there.
I’m sure someone will be along shortly to give you some sage advice and pointers to get you started.
The main thing is chassis, chassis, chassis.
All the best.

Bought it? Sounds like someone should have paid you to take it away!

You've certainly got yourself a challenge, good luck.

That is pretty much how I bought mine - drunken night on ebay. Looked great as had just been painted, refurbed roof and resonable alloys. That hid a shot chassis, inerior fit for the bin (no engine/box, bonnet and a kink in the chassis as had been in an accident. A hole new learning curve and just had near 5 years of great motoring.

Enjoy the build. Loads of info and knowkedge on here as well as a great bunch of lads.

Good luck with the S1. That is the car my mate and I rescued after it was pulled out of a shed and left in the elements. We did not have the time to do the work so with regret sold it about a month ago. If you want to DM me I’ll share my number and happily tell you what I know about the car from the previous owner.

Chassis back, heavy lumps of metal back where they belong.

The trailing arms and tank cradle have been painted with stonechip, primed and top coated arctic white.

I'm thinking about putting some strips of foam between the top of the outriggers and the body to prevent small stones getting stuck there. Has anyone done that or something similar or is it not worth worrying about?

Don't do it, the foam will just hold water=problems

My old S2 had something like mudflaps. Screwed onto the engine bay side of the footwells and hanging down tight against the front tubes of the outriggers. Hung about an inch below the bottom of the tube.
No signs of stones and grit getting between the outriggers and the body. Also no signs of outrigger rust.
Think I've seen that. Good idea
