I have rewired every car ive had to improve lights. To see if an improvement is possible simply unplug one bulb when the engine is running and the lights on, see if the other "brightens up". Of course if the wiring is not up to it you could always go the HID way which takes half the current of a bulb, a little pricey though!

Don't www.mod-wise.co.uk do a kit for brighter lights?

Good point, sorry David these guys have beaten you to it. In fact I see they've got a fan controller too - looks like they're trying to put you out of business!

The web address should be www.mod-wise.com The co.uk version does not work. Cheers.

That depends on whether your S is fitted with fog lamps or high intensity driving lamps (see my previous posting on the subject). If they're fog lamps, they can be used with the dipped beam, but won't really make much difference (also, they can only legally be used when visibility is reduced, and darkness doesn't count ). If they're driving lights, they'll make a big difference, but must be wired with the full beam.

I seem to remember Hella produce/produced some lights which were specifically designed to augment the normal dipped beam, but otherwise I think that pretty much all the after market lights you'll find in Halford etc. will either be fog lamps or high intensity driving lamps.

Reckon that the upgraded bulbs route could be your best bet (and mine, as I'm an everyday S driver too).

Jonzo said: Schnozz....did you ever sort out your headlight improving?...i tried driving home last night in pitch black and torrential rain with b'stard 4x4's sending small tidal waves over me, it was a horrible experience, i kept expecting to end up in a hedge along the country lanes i have to use to&from work.
I couldn't see sod all with the low power headlights and misting windows and crap wipers !
Its put me off winter running, unless i can improve the visibility, there are no street lamps around here!
Are the Philips bulbs worth the try?..can the S3 type drive lights be used on own without main beam?..anyone?

to be honest I ended up distracted by a few other bits and bobs on the cars and just tried to avoid driving in dark and wet conditions which are a nightmare.

I went to Halfords and bought the Bosch upgraded headlights bulbs. Made no difference at all IMO. Waste of £25 or so. From reading various things I came to the conclusion it would be illegal to wire up a set of driving lights to come on with both dipped and full beam. I find this to be the worst when i am driving on dipped, especially if something comes the other way.

If they only switched on with full beam i dont think i will bother. But of I can upgrade the standard headlights then I may be interested.

Having changed several light set-ups in older classics, I have found that the quality of the reflector can make a big difference. If you buy top quality light units,Cibbie/Lucas etc,you will notice a difference over cheaper makes.(Ring/Hella).

Okay, so has anyone fitted the headlightwiring improvement kit from Mod-wise?...If so, was it worth it and how much was it...oh and is it easy to do?
How much are replacement Cibie headlights for an S?
I quite like the idea of putting the higher strength (err, illegal?) bulbs in, being as the light thrown out from existing is so poor, surely these 80/100w types will seem like 'normal' headlights? We're so low down i cant see us blinding anyone anyway !

when i replaced my bulbs and put the unit back together the headlights were adjusted far too high and dipped was more like the height of full beam. I didnt get flashed by anyone because the headlights are so dim I dont think they even noticed

Of course i have never used illegal bulbs, but i have just fitted the Philips Vision Plus. Just the same light output, ie 50% more. The "S" kit will just plug in, just finallising the cable lenghts.
