best engine oil??

I've read some very interesting technical articles on this stuff.. several linked to from previous threads on here... it was mostly along the lines of flakes of "lubricant" block up your oil filters and form a sludge in deep corners. It does indeed make the engine run better, but for a limited life.. all the positive tests talk about increased performance, but none of them ever talk about engine lifetime
I would shy away from a car proudly displaying a Slick50 sticker and an owner saying he put it in on a regular basis..

Mind you, if ted's has hydraulic tappets or not it doesn't prove anything as the word 'consistency' seems to be entirely missing from TVR's dictionary. It'd kill a sunday afternoon though so I'm in .

It's been a while since I had the heads or rocker covers off a car, but surely on the car with no hydraulic followers you have a pushrod under one side of the rocker and valve stem under the otherside.. ?
With the hydraulic bucket followers inplace, this is not so..
I'd have thought it easy to tell with the rocker cover off..
btw Steve - I didn't imply that simply changing to hydraulic tappets would give a power/torque lift - I said I reckoned the heads had been reworked. If I was wrong, that's cool, I don't want to be accused of being wrong about the wrong thing

And it will kill three afternoons putting it all back together again and another deciding what to do with all the spare bolts and washers that we took off and didn't need...

Don't worry... I think we are all in the "not sure what the hell is going on" soup at the moment. I was told that the main reasons was the exhaust manifold. To use hydraulics or solids on the V8 doesn't need a head rework (if you exclude making the push rod holes bigger).

Just to add my two penneth. Several years ago, I used Slick 50 in a Vauxhall Cavalier which had a relatively new engine, (because the instructions said it helped protect new engines as well) but within a month the big end bearing siezed and it destroyed the entire engine. I always suspected that Slick 50 caused the problem by possibly blocking the oil channel in the big end shells. It's interesting to hear now that others have had problems which coincide with using Slick 50.
