Bit of a daft question but now that I have my S2 running, albeit roughly, she does sound very valve-train-ee. Almost like it's running dry up top. Initially I thought the alternator was stuffed but having stethoscoped it, it's fine.

Could it be a waterpump? Can I remove the rocker covers without messing about with inlet, injectors etc? They are weeping oil anyway so needs to come off at some point.

I'm normally an air cooled guy so these are new to me.

Surely checking & adjusting the valve clearances is your starting point? If I understand correctly, your noise is 'tapping' ?

Also check that oil is getting consistently all along the rocker shafts and everything is free to move at the same time.

Maybe I've misunderstood, valve train noise to me is generally 'a rattly tapping noise' which I don't equate with a rotating component like the alternator or water pump.

Check for the TVR added piece of 'non' vacuum' tube added to PCV valve tube from one rocker to the other,
for it collapsing and chattering the valve. A@

If you suspect the water pump, drop the belt off and run it for a minute or two?

Only thing in the way of removing rocker covers is the alternator.

Thanks folks will try all those suggestions.

As far as the noise goes, I'd say it sounds more like its running dry up top (scraping/graunchy bearing on an ancillary type sound) with a bit of tapping.

When you take the belt off as mentioned above, grab hold of the alternator pulley, rotate it and try rocking it from side to side feeling for any play. Do the same for the water pump. Both should spin freely so if the bearings in either are dry or knackered you'll feel it,

Hopefully it's not the water pump because that could be a world of pain if the car has been standing a long time.

Because the studs/bolts are likely to be seized and getting the pump off without sheering one is a bit of a gamble. Proceed with caution thumbup

Belt is off. The waterpump spins freely but the bearing is a little graunchy. I think that's the top end sound i was looking for.

However, it also sounds like there is scraping coming from the lower crank pulley itself. What could that be?

A bit of debris caught behind the pulley? Is there a timing mark pointer which could be bent and touching the pulley.

If you decide to have a go at the water pump repeatedly soak all the nuts/bolts/studs with Plusgas or similar (not WD40) for at least a week and use as much heat as you can get onto the metal. If any of them refuse to budge don't use excessive force. Get on the web and find a mobile stud removal service. They have special tools which can concentrate a lot force onto the bolts with less risk of snapping them off compared to your right arm and a long bar.

Yes there is a toothed timing mark pointer. Will loom more closely at that tomorrow.

The whole waterpump looks to be fairly caked in oil tbh. It may play in my favour...

Any recommendations on a good supplier of waterpump for these machines?

That's a ludicrous price!

I had to pay over £130 for a genuine NOS BMC pump.



You're never going to be able to retire on those prices rofl

I have to say that between PH putting the brakes on being able to post more than 5 posts within the first 24 or 48 hours (whichever it was) to not being able to post photos or videos in your first 2 weeks of joining(!) I stand by my statement above that this site is indeed archaic!

I'm not on FB but I hear its where the fun is at. May have to rethink that then.
