Hi, managed to get out in my 1988 S1 on Sunday as it’s first outing of the year.

After about an hour of driving I noticed the bonnet looked like it wasn’t shut fully and bouncing.

Turns out the catch decided to become detached from the bonnet. I think the nut has just worked loose and I have luckily still got catch part with the spring on it. Does anyone know what size nut it should be?

Thanks

From memory it is M8. I could be mistaken and given the age of the car and TVR's approach to stock control it could also be 5/16" UNF.

Should be easy enough to sort out either way.

A quick search on the S Series Facebook group would suggest it is metric, M10
Does a 17mm spanner fit the other one?

Thanks both. It’s not an m8 and I don’t have any m10 handy so will try with a spanner to check. Although, I am now wondering if the top of the bolt has sheered as that picture looks much longer. Need to go and have a look.

If it's not M8 then it's definitely M10 (or Imperial equivalent - they were fitted to old Minis).

Very unlikely to have sheered off though. There's no strain on the shaft of the pin and it takes some doing to sheer a 10mm rod.

The thread is M10 and the parts are as Phillpot picture shows (It would be prudent to use a nyloc).
The Pin/thimble/spring/pressed nut are from a Ford Capri/Granada era cars, the two mudguard washers and thick washer are the added 'TVR' parts. A@
