Just thinking towards Le Mans next year.......

I know the back end has felt quite twitchy in mine at 100mph+ (on track only of course). What have people on here got out of their S and how stable did the car feel?

Johno clocked me at 143 a couple of weeks ago and I’ve had a indicated 145, it felt fine at those speeds with the top on but felt a little wandery above 130 with the top off. Still was good fun!!!!

I had my S to a registered 140mph when it was young. Had it to the Redline on the Rev counter aswell when the speedo started to go backwards after 120 mph.

Are you going to Le Mans then Schnozz ???

Mine pulls like a train up to the red line at 162 in fifth, and has been there many times. Absolutely rock solid at all speeds (including cornering and braking) although it does tend to wander when there are strong crosswinds. It has non-standard suspension though. On the original setup it felt tail happy at speeds over 100 or so.

Cheers,
Peter Humphries (and a green V8S)

Hi Mark

Yeah, have been thinking about it for a while and need to get my arse in gear and book it all up. Wanted to go for donkeys years but would only go if I could drive a Tiv. Missed it last year as I was in Mauricius.

You going?

Dont really want to bolt a spoiler on my baby

What if I hit the boot release switch at 100mph - surely this will give me the downforce to keep stable?

Martin GIlbert and Myself in his V8Sc hit an indicated 150mph in his V8S in Germany back in 1997. it was raining and bloody cold, so lots of nice dense air for the engine. Thing was, just over 140mph, this feckin great big hornet crawled out of the front heater vents .. we almost lost the car trying to kill the thing before we got stung !

Yes, booked and had confirmation. All I need to do is to sort out ferry bookings and how I can pack copious quantities of alcohol into the Griffith along with the camping gear !

Will be in Houx Annexe. Will be there with a Cerberra and whoever else wants to join us...

I had 130mph indicated in mine, was still pulling but I ran out of road. Felt pretty stable though.

In the 2CV 65mph indicated. Ran out of steam

I got my old 2cv up to 80-5 (estimated, obviously, by the deflection around the speedo past zero again) down a very steep hill with a mate on board with a very strong tail wind and a bit of drafting past a lorry on the top of the hill. How we cheered as we plunged down the hill in a very unsteady fashion laughing at all the cars we passed until it spat one of its spark plugs out of the head with a hell of a bang and then attempted to maintain the speed on 1 of 2 cylinders - lumpy, I should say so... clutch in, indicate

Not managed to get more than 130mph out of mine (hood down, two lardies up). That said, I've checked my speedo against a GPS system this week and it's spot on (probably thanks to skinny tyres).

Skinny tyres ehh!

I must try the 125x15's off the CV. Could lead to interesting handling characteristics.

Managed 140 in mine many times even on a very slight uphill gradient. Could only do 135 before I lowered the old girl by 1.5 inches. Must be something to do with the Cd. (Before I lowered it, the car wanted to take off above 120, the bonnet would lift and jump about all over the place and the steering used to go very light).

Jas.

P.S. All done in Germany of course!

I've only maxed it once 129mph (just couldn't get 130mph), this was 2 up + luggage, roof down and an ambient temperature close to 35`c.
At about 105 it gets a bit twitchy but I can drive through it and by 115 its rock solid.

Only got it up to 140 so far, we'll have to wait and see what the french roads hold next year . It felt quite stable at that speed, then again there were no corners looming .
Have been faster in the Omegod which actually at those speeds feels more planted and you can still hear yourself think , unlike the S where conversation above 75 is a problem or not

Jas, how did you lower it 1.5 inches??? what on earth did you do with the exhausts?

CarZee,

Much stiffer springs (700Lbs front, 500Lbs rear replacing TVR's standard squidgy 220Lbs springs on all corners), very tightly controlled by good dampers was the answer. This means that although the car is significantly lower, it doesn't smack the exhausts on the floor too much, and ride quality is kept reasonably comfortable with the dampers. Handling is phenomonal! You do have to watch for sleeping policemen and country lanes where the centre of the road can be higher. (I have also occaisionally clipped catseyes when I pull out to overtake and give the car a foot full of throttle, but this doesn't happen too often). I actually really enjoy driving the car with this set up, and it actually feels similar to a racecar in some ways!
