just in case anyone suffers the same problem I thought I would post an update as I finally got around to sorting it out!
when i had a close look (with my head bent around the footwell like a yoga student) i could see that a fault had developed inside the connector to the point the ignition feed wire outside rubber had burned away at least an inch from the connector. The connector still would not open, even trying Johno's tips. I assume there is an assortment of melted plastic and wire inside! So I cut out the connector and stuck teh soldering iron at the steering column end to remove the wire. Re-wired in without using connector now so should not be any further problems.

Bit late to this thread, but thought I'd throw in my 2p worth as I had a similar lights go out at 55mph on a motorway in the rain..
Turned out the relay was sticking. Since it was Christmas eve and I was in the middle of nowhere I took it out, applied a couple of gentle taps, (wacked it on the floor whilst swearing), sprayed WD40 into it, wacked it once more for good measure and its fine now..
If your car is ralatively new to you, check for access to fuses and relays, passenger footwell above their feet. Mine had been closed with those plastic ziplock thingies which I couldn't loosen with fingers, (and wouldn't have been able to do anything to with teeth even if I could reach).. Now tied up with string until I can think of somethinbg else..
