Can anyone advise the best place to source a new universal joint for the steering column on my V8S? Thanks

TVR special... So TVR dealer or specialist.

Assuming that the steering setup is the same as the S3 (Assumptions? With a TVR? Is that wise? ), you could try Peninsular.

I just got a new top UJ from them for £64 including VAT and next day delivery. I've had a few bits from them over the last few months, and they always seem prompt and helpful.

Blimey steve you must be getting mellow, I would have expected, 'what one? the top or bottom one', before the 'see a expert' .
Seriously though simba when you get it sorted post the results on here, it'll come in handy I'm sure .

It's bound to the the top UJ. It's well worth fitting a gator and greasing them well when you put the new one on - steering rack end gators do the job nicely but anything that keeps the dirt and heat out and the grease in will extend the life dramatically.

This is how the story ends! Top U.J. supplied by Mole Valley TVR and dispatched to Bonny Scotland, next day delivery, total price including delivery and VAT - £68.
Not bad considering the part came from Surrey. I have now fitted the UJ, taking my time the job took about 2 hours to complete including protecting the new UJ with a gaitor. Thanks for all your assistance lads. I would recommend Mole Valley for sourcing parts and for quick deliveries. No more play or excessive vibration on the steering - bliss! EB

Yep - I second that, Mole Valley's parts guru; Keith Kennard is a top banana!

Eric
Was this play very evident on the move, or was it more evident when you grabbed the steering shaft around the UJ and felt the play there?
I have a little play up and down on the steering wheel but I think it may just be the bulkhead bearing and not the UJ, just checking before I dive in.

That'll be the bulkhead bearing. The column is held in 2 places, if the top support nearest you is firm and the bulkhead bearing is good then up/down/side-to-side movement isn't possible so wear in the uj could only manifest itself as play in the turning motion of the wheel.

I think.

Mark

Harry, there was significant play on my steering whilst on the move and the car was prone to wander at high speed. There was also significant vibration through the steering column which I presumed may have been worn balljoints/wheel balance or such like. Much to my delight, replacing the top UJ has tightened up the steering magnificently , theres no play and no vibration. Ive effectively killed two birds with the one stone. The best £68 Ive spent recently as the car is so very much nicer to drive. If you replace your UJ take Green V8S`s advice and cover it with a gaitor. I got one from my local scrappy which cost me nowt and should extend the life of the top joint significantly. The play on the steering wheel whilst stationary was very evident (about three quarter to one inch movement on the steering wheel before before the road wheels responded) Best Wishes, Eric Benn.

Cheers for that eric, I think I must have a little play in the bulkhead bearing as it's rock steady at any speed and no backlash in the steering department, any legal speed that is .
I've added it to the list of jobs for the near future.
