Expansion tank question

It makes no sense having the pressure cap on the 'expansion' tank whatsoever, because for the pressure cap to work, the pressure below the seal or flange on the cap has to be greater than the pressure above it for it to vent excess pressure. The fitted 'expansion' tank has no lip for the cap flange seal to compress against, there for the pressure below the seal / flange is the same as above it. With the pressure in equilibrium, the cap will not vent! Simple really!!

This makes perfect sense to me. My 1600M doesn't appear to have a pressurised cooling system however - the coolant reservoir is sealed with a plug and the expansion tank has a normal cap and an overflow pipe heading down to the ground. No other M-series variant ever had this arrangement and it appears that all subsequent TVRs, such as the S, have something slightly more conventional as well. I am somewhat perplexed.

Just looked a the offical S series TVR engineering parts catalogue, i've just obtained
What Jes says is right. To save confussion the sheet in front of me shows the 'swirlpot tank' fitted with the 'pressure cap' and the 'expansion tank' with the 'Non-pressure cap'.
Shame the catelogue stops at the S3C from my point of view and all the parts are TVR numbers not the real numbers

I have three different ones.... with different part numbers....
Whilst I probably have the Friday version, you must have the Monday, Wednesday and friday versions then

Steve do the 3 different versions also show the pressure and non-pressure caps transposed as well, as the actual part numbers are not really the issue here at the moment

Had to join this "gassing" since I've had my fair share of problems with these "expansion tank" affairs. It is of course an overflow tank. As was correctly said its not pressurised but coolant definately does and should return into the swirl pot. However I cannot work out how it does this and would love to know.
I had the same setup on both my S3 and now my V8S.
The tank is a leyland part (no. ARH 259)in theory available from Rimmer bros, or interex.co.uk.
It was fitted to the Rover SD1 (V8 only), however it was probably fitted to other "supercars" too- I did hear the Morris Marina!.
