I was going to order some new special plates via the internet (nothing pax mower style just with TVR S3 written below the lettering! )

When I previously held up my old personalised plates against my car they seemed a bit longer. I am loathe to order anything via the net if they are going to require a trim to get them to fit! especially if I get the new style plate with the euro badge!

are they slightly narrower than supplied ?

Hi Phil

I put on new plates last summer to go to france, and the rear plate as supplied was longer than the rear cavity. It was fairly easy to trim with a fine hacksaw and then smoothed off with a file

Cheers

Rod

ps It didnt lose any of the 'formatting' of the plates either, so they look normal

that was the important thing as I was thinking of going for the euro style ones and thought they would look strange if it was hacksawed one side and not the other so the numbers were offset!

many thanks

PS - is your car still "away"?

Shnozz,

Where are you getting them from? As you've just reminded me to get some ready for Le Mans to save having an ugly GB sticker on the rear

I replaced my rear plate a while back as it looked really tatty. I blithely went into Halfords and bought a new standard plate (no flag, lettering etc.) and then discoved that it was too long when I came to fit it.

As Rod said, a hacksaw did the trick, but it was a bit of a pain to have to do, so it might be worth checking if you can specify the length of the plate when you order.

Incidentally, I also found, having used the old plate as a guide, that when I drilled the screw holes they went through the letters. Since I could only find yellow plastic screws (apparently the black ones are illegal due to their potential letter altering properties) this does look a bit odd. Again, might be worth checking first, or possibly considering using sticky pads to mount the plate.

I wouldn't worry about the need for a GB sticker or similar on your plate. No one cares in France.

It seems that all the plates will have to be cut to size as mentionned by Richard. I have therefore avoided anything with a border so it doesnt look odd if cut off. I have gone for the euro/union jack though cos I think it will look good and it does avoid any chance of getting stopped abroad (although as ted says they couldnt give a rats......)

From the looks of it, they'll do custom size anyway, so no cutting.

Anyone know the sizes required at all? (Not that I'm too lazy to go into the garage and measure them myself!)

just tried to measure but dont have a tape measure and using a bit of string not working too well!

let me know if you measure yours please - i might have to call them asap to ask for the rear to be made a few mm shorter. saves me muckinga round with the hacksaw. I didnt actually notice the custom size thing when ordering.

I'm sure that with the presense of your by massive PH livery they'd never even get around to noticing your plates or GB sticker

Mine's 510mm x 110mm on the rear (trimmed) and 520mm x 110mm on the front (standard). You'll probably need to lose 5mm each end off a standard plate to get it to fit on the rear.

Just ordered some today DB, complete with TVR logo. They claim next day delivery if ordered before 12, so we'll see what tomorrow brings. I've also ordered the 10mm smaller rear plate and managed to get "www.pistonheads.com - AndyF007" on the bottom (make cheques payable to me please Ted )

Gone for the same thing, EU/GB logo for avoiding a nasty GB sticker for Le Mans
