:Got back last night after visiting JSG's house and taking collection of a wonderful V8S. Fabulous drive back even though it was mainly motorway. I guess it gave me a chance to get to know the car a little. After about 40 miles I realised I was driving in a severely rigid position and relaxed shoulders and hands and sat back in the seat. WOW it was great. Woke up this morning with a view of posting my experience but was greeted by sunshine, so off I shot into the country. It was the finest afternoon possible, just arrived back feeling severely buzzy and somewhat guilty, I'm sure I shouldn't be enjoying the car this much its BRILL!!!

On the return part of the journey though it began to make a strange knocking noise somewhere from the engine bay - it can only be described as the sound you here on a roller coaster as you start the first big climb on the chain. K-K-K-K-K - the noise keeps time with the rev speed any ideas what it might be and am I O.K. driving it with this going on? - it only happens when the car is pulling significantly say uphill in fourth at about thirty or when accelerating. I really hope its nothing much I'm really skint now - but I can't get the smile off my face - thanks to you guys for all your encouragement and gentle pushing. Also Big Thanks to John (top banana) for spending time with me and my better half - hope it all works out man, I now know how you must have felt - I feel a duty to keep it in A1 condition and Yes if it does have to go on sale again - you have first refusal.

Congratulations Ren, welcome to the exclusive 1 of the 400 or so club . You must be the first new S owner for a while that hasn't collected their car in the rain .
Glad you're enjoying it, as for the noise...not sure something that I'd have to hear myself to pass comment on, check with John he'll probably know what it is if it's been heard before, I assume you haven't given it stick until it's properly warmed up .

For John, commiseration’s mate hope you get it all sorted out soon and maybe re-join the fold in the not too distant future, chin up .

Nice Day!

I was with Mark (Ren) on this run (in my 350i), and afterwards he took me out in the car to hear the noise. At first, from inside the cockpit, it did sound like pinking, especially as it was only happening under load - and its currently running on 95RON.

However, on getting back to my gaff, I stuck my head under the bonnet, and the sound can actually be heard on idle, and didn't sound like pinking to me - but I'm no expert.

Really hope, and expect, that its not a major issue. The car is incredible. No car of that age has any right to be in that condition.

Thought my wedge was loud

Ren,

Sorry about the phone going flat. As I said before I was cut off, I suspect it's due to labouring the engine in too high a gear, the Rover V8 engine likes to run at 3000 revs plus, I would expect the revs to be about 2000 or less at 30mph. I've not experienced it.

Aside from the hole in the exhaust which will amplify any noise I would guess the 'pinking noise' may be down to the fuel octane you used (I generously filled it up with Super Unleaded on Friday). This would also be backed up by the fact that you didn't experience any noises until after you'd filled up.

Try filling up with Super Unleaded and changing down to keep the revs up - 3rd gear for 30mph - and You should be ok. You can use four star LRP as well as it is pre-cat.

It was a right bummer today - all that sun and no TVR .

Anyway enjoy it and keep the bloody revs up

Ah....... could be a exhaust manifold gasket or split in the manifold somewhere then is there any sooting around , not sure about the 95 RON though, did john run it on that .

Yes the pre cat V8S is probably one the best sounds this side of the SEAC, sadly for the driver it sounds much bette form the outside . I know the pre cat griff's have a similar lump and note but the V8S seems to have a bigger badder exhaust thats all .......re condition, yes as I said before Ren bought it, it is one of the nices V8S's you'll come across, so hopefully he did get a section of Johns arm in the purchase process .

Manifold gaskets have just been done, there is a crack / hole that needs welding - Ren's got the quote now so I can't remember the exact wording.

No I ran it on 97 or Optimax. Ren said that he only noticed the noise after filling up with 95, so I suspect a mixture of pinking / exhaust noise and labouring in too high a gear.

Sorry for the slow response, it's not easy to type with half an arm.

ps I won't have that much longer if the wife has her way.

Congratulations Ren on achieving S ownership. Good to know that sacrificing a garden had the desired result, and that you didn't have to resort to goats or virgins!

Commiserations also to John. I'm sure none of us like to dwell too much on the thought of giving up the S. I obviously don't know all the ins and outs, but I hope you make it back into the fold in the not-too-distant future, and at least you know she's gone to a good home.

OOOOHHHH! Definitely the big end bearings gone!!!

And if that didn't wipe the smile off your face then nothing ever will again

Welcome to the fold Ren, I think you'll find that the problem is the same as I had for a while. You haven't yet realised that there is another 4" of throttle travel. Took me a while to find it, but when I did .

Comiserations John, but don't wander too far from the forums, and I'm sure you will always be welcome at the meets, regardless of what you will be driving.

AAaaaahhhh there does seem to be a pedal type thing just to the right of the brake. If I press that the car does seem to spring into life , I think I will run the tank to lowish and then fill up with 98 ron if that doesn't do the trick then I might get some professional help in just to take a look. Thanks for the replies - I feel like part of a club.

Podie,

Thanks for the offer of the beers - very generous. I won't be far away - as a moderator I will keeping an eye on you lot.

As soon as finances allow I'll be looking again - the S is still my favourite apart from a Tuscan racer

You weren't paying attention during the test drive were you.

I'm sure it's only down you being 'careful' whilst you get used to the car.

Ren,

Weclome to the Club - As said before on here sounds like a hole in the exhaust mainfold as i had a similar problem on mine a couple of months ago. As mentioned by John you need to adopt a different driving style for the V8S and keep the Revs around 2,500 or above. You have been lucky with the weather - when i picked mine up it chucked it down.

collected mine in sunny weather and had the roof off almost constantly since :big grin!!:
only glitches so far are dodgy throttle cabvle which snapped at the dealer before I picked it up, and fuel pump wiring which resulted in a non-start at the g'friend's parent's house - sorted with a quick waggle of the wiring in the passenger footwell .. will sort it out when it leaves me stranded somewhere important!
Feels great though
