I am looking for a hosuse and am getting married soon so i need to free up a few quid, plus the wife tobe, cant stand the elise...

So i am in the process of selling my Elise and i am ooking for alternatives.

I know the tvr and elise are differnt animals, but i wondered if anyone had any experiances of both cars?

Any typical examples on running costs?

Reliablilty (been quite supprised, what i have heard so far seems very good)?

I take it they are as comfy as they seem (bear in mind i am used to an elise?

How do the GF's cope with driving it (i dont like her driving the elise, very easy to spin and hard to correct (if not a experianced driver))?

And any owners clubs i could pop along to in the north west (stockport) area and have a nosy at a few pls S1/2/3 etc.

Cheers.

as you say, different kind of animal. I have never owned an Elise, I cancelled my order when I learned my new job had on street parking and bought an MGF :O because I thought it less thievable. However, i will try and answer some of your questions at least.

Running costs - best to take a look at some profiles. I know Ted keeps his S profile pretty up to date. Mine is used as an everyday car and covers about 8k a year. Costs me about £800 - £1000 in servicing and then a few repair bills (mainly auto-electricians :angry in addition. Add your petrol (expect around 18 - 25mpg), tax and insurance and there you go.

Reliability - it is a Ford engine. Generally very reliable but it will be between 15 and 10 years old. Your modern Rover engine is likely to be more reliable, as would a more modern Ford engine! Having said that, easy to work on and shouldnt have too many problems compared to other vehicles of that age.

Comfort - better than an elise. worse than a BMW. It has hard suspension, its noisy etc etc. Personally I wouldnt expect comfort levels much better than an elise. But you are used to that anyway so what the heck.

If you are worried about your GF spinning the elise then I dont think you should let her drive the S. I found you had to rev the sh*t out of an elise to get it to go fast and the handling very predictable and not at all scary at the speeds i drove. The S is not so forgiving and will scare you at lower speeds. It is more torquey as well. the car is heavier, the clutch and gearbox heavier (and steering probably) than an elise. I know plenty of women that drive them no problems (far better than me!) but if you wouldnt let her out in the elise then i think the S is a big no no.

oh, and yes, pop along and see some cars, chat to some owners....

The Manchester, Lancashire etc branch of the TVR Car Club meets the second Tuesday of the month at the Swan With Two Nicks (sic) in Bollington. People usually (I've only been twice, though!) arrive from around 8ish.

At the two meetings I've attended so far, there were no S's, but my mate (Ren Dao) just bought a stonking V8S, and I'm sure he'll be there at the next meet...

The place is on Park Lane, in Bollinton:

Based in Stockport myself, you're welcome to come and have a nose at the S2 if I can have a nose at the Elise
Mail me offline if you want to arrange something

I had a 98 standard elise and have now got a 93 S3C. I sold the elise as I was scared about loosing to much money and bought the S3 after driving one and loving it. I always wanted one when they were new but it was out of my reach back then. I think you will be surprised how good it is in comparison. It has power an elise can only dream about and the roof is much butter in terms of water tightness and ease of fitment. I was payng around £750 for fully comp on the elise and now only pay £250 on the S3 - bargain. Find a good one and you will not be disappointed!!!!

Hopefully I will be at the Stockport meet - have had a few problems but that aside they really are good cars, especialy in the area of power and outright funability.
