A clumsy oaf (namely me ) has knocked off the rear view mirror on my S3! I have tried super glue (my usual fix all solution) but it doesn’t work! Halfords sold me a double-sided sticky pad, which detaches itself . Any ideas on the best type of glue or other method would be appreciated.

Hi John,

Have you tried going to a phone shop and buying the sticky pads that attach celphone arials to car windows?

Or.. how about trim tape, the sort you'd stick badges/numberplates to bodys?

Cheers,

Dave.

Hi John,

Good to meet you on Sunday ! I had a new windscreen fitted today and Autoglass have obviously re-fitted my rear view mirror and it appears to be stuck on very firmly. Not sure what they used, but might worth calling your local branch as they will probably be able to tell you.

Hope to see you at the next meet.

Cheers

I had my screen done by Autoglass and when leaving for 4 days in France the next morning the rear view mirror fell off ! They'd used some sticky pad or another and it was crud ! I used double sided tape to get me through the weekend in the end.

The permanent solution is available from Halfords and is sold specifically for this purpose. The pack contains a membrane sheet that you impregnate with the glue supplied and then apply to the screen. I did mine and have had no issues with it since, held very firmly. Its a couple of quid I think. All you need to do is to make sure you cut the membrane sheet to the size of the mirror base thingy....

Cheers

Thanks Dave and Paul,

I'll take a look at the cell phone stuff but I think it will be like the stuff halfords sold me. Where I work we have a fleet of over 1000 cars (No TVR's ), Autoglass sort out any damaged windscreens, so I'll have a chat to the chap from there next time they sort out a windscreen might even get them to sort it out for me!

How much did the new windsield cost Dave and did they do a good job? Must get together for a spin sometime, drop me an email, whatever you do don't sell the car! or else...

Thanks for the info Johno, I will bear it in mind but think I'll go with Autoglass. I must have been typing this when you posted!

I think the double-sided stuff has a black side and a green side, the wrong way round it is cr*p, the right way round is mch better. Sorry I can't remember which way round is right, but it sounds like you've found the other one!

I had this prob on a previous car. The double sided pads from the windscreen companies were the only thing that worked. I just popped in to the local windscreen place to ask what they used and they gave me a couple FOC.

Nice blokes.

John,

The screen only cost me £50 as I did it through my insurance and they picked up the rest (about £600 !!).

I went to the Kingston branch as they have done several TVR's before. However, they ended up having the car for two days as it turned out to be a little more awkward than they expected.

End result looks great - no milky edges of the screen covered by black insulating tape any more, oh yeah - no large cracks in it any more either !

Cheers

Paul

Had the same problem on my S3 3 years ago. I got the pad used to attach the mirror on the Fiesta Mk3 / Escort (Mk 4/5 I think) from a Ford Dealer. Clean the mirror and screen with something that will not leave an oily film and hey presto, it's still stuck even after some recent serious attention from my 2 year old son. Hope it works for you.

Extream Delight!
My mirror is now attached to the windscreen, as it should be. Thanks for the help guys. Johno came up with the winning tip. I found some Rear View Mirror Bonder, made by Loctite. Basically a bit of gauze/membrane which you cover with the glue supplied and Bob's Your Uncle!

Thanks for the help again.
