Bought S2 last week - very pleased BUT occasionally after some miles and well warmed up, appears fuel injection equivalent of choke comes on (1200 rpm at idle, lumpy when revved in town etc)
Ideas welcomed.

So it's the idling that goes up and down? if so, it sounds like the usual throttle pot problem that all the Ford 2.9s suffer with.

If you read previous threads in the S forum there's lots of talk about this. The throttle pot sits at the very front of the plenuim (sp) chamber costs about £30 from Ford to buy, very easy to replace.

Cheers,

Dave.

Yes, BUT please note that when Ford changed the throttle pot to gold connectors a few years ago they also changed the wiring. I went to buy a new one and was told that I also needed the modified wiring harness (with gold connector plug). Check the connectors to see if this mod has been done already.

The "choke" function is controlled by the Air Bypass Valve (mounted on the front of the plenum), operated by the ECU, which lets more air in when the engine is cold. It can stick open if it gets dirty, but usually just needs cleaning rather than replacing. However, in this case it sounds more like the throttle pot.

Ah yes, I guess my loom must have been modded before, as I never had to do this.

Sorry If I made this sound too easy

Fantastic response
Now that have owned S2 for 5 complete days (or is it daze?) problem does not seem to occur until really warm - no fluctuation in rpm - just a real piglet when throttle is at about 1500-2000 regardless of gear.
Thanks for tips - start trying them this weekend.

as per the bible!
could be the throttle pot, or it could be misaligned.
faulty lambda senser. this causes the ECU to create the wrong mixture. could also be a faulty temperature sensor or thermotime switches. this is known as gaging!
this normaly happens at about 2500 rpm.
You could be lucky and find this straight away as suggested by other members, but sometimes the only way is to have the car tested and save money by not having to change half the sensors, there not cheap!
if you are wondering what the bible is, its Steve Heaths The TVR S series (second edition) £29.95 and its worth every penny. trouble is it takes about 6 weeks to get one (in cambridge)

Order it direct from the TVRCC and it takes around 24-48 hours providing they have it in stock which they normally do. You can even order online at www.tvrcc.com

- only on catalysed cars. Any S2C's out there?
