Firstly just like to say hello to everyone. As a virgin S owner, I appreciate the wealth of experience on these pages and thanks to those who have answered my previous queries.
As I am now dreaming of longer trips next summer, I wondered what peoples thoughts were on essential tools and spares for the boot?

cheers, merry

You'll need a spare throttle cable, they are well known to snapping

Cheers,

Dave.

Fit a new fan belt and keep the used one as a nicley stretched easyfit spare.
The handbook states Ford Capri but various ones were used(mine is offically 3litre volvo size) and the easiest is to take the current one off and get a new that matchs and fit that.

And I agree keep a spare throttle cable.

In nearly two years all I have had go wrong is the fan belt jumped off.
Unlike Griffs/Chimaeras the Ss will start after being left for a few weeks.
I've just got to get the heater fan to work!

That will be a few nuts and bolts to reattach the exhaust then Mark.
Also Bin Liner (not the Afghan variety) for when/if you have a puncture, fit the spacesaver and don't particularly want all the crap off the road in your car.

Merryand a happy New

Too right... mine went after 5 months of ownership, but I managed to bodge it with some packing tape (don't ask:-) to get where I was going.
Anyone know the Part Number etc. for the new cable as I really ought to remove the tape now its been there for 5 months (ahem)..

Cheers

Its a 2.9 Granada part, I would also recommend a small tool kit, one with pliers and a few screwdrivers, sockets and spanners, it’s well worth having them in the boot.

Just bought one from my local Ford dealer.

Cable part no 6720349 desc. Cable - control £12.35 + vat

End retaining clip - 6142979 £0.24 + vat

Total price £14.79 same day dely.

I haven't tried fitting it yet, but it looks like the right bit.

Btw got the part no's off the PH parts guide - really useful source of info.

Cheers

Electrical 'chocolate block' connections for the obvious use, but if you're in a hurry or don't have a throttle cable handy, you can use them to hold a broken throttle cable together. Might have nicked that one from one of shpub books, actually. (Sorry Steve!) Well worth a read if you're new to the 'S' fold as I am........

Richb, this amalgamating pipe repair stuff is available in Halfords. Gets you to the next place where you can effect a decent repair with a new hose.

Bulbs, fan belt, fuses, wire, connections, throttle cable, stout string, self tappers, degreaser, wd40, brake fluid, diff oil, engine oil, water, as many tools as you can squeeze in around your luggage; the list goes on.......

Don't forget your sense of humour

Many moons ago I replaced my spacesaver tire with a couple of cans of tire-repair foam. Thankfully haven't yet had need to see if they work - anybody else used these things?

Andy,

I recently ran over a stanley knife blade and had a flat tyre. Luck would have it I was in B&Q car park when this happened so I bought one of those tyre weld cans in B&Q. They do the job (i.e get you home) the downside to them is you cant use the tyre again. Ok in my case the tyre was not repairable, but if the flat tyre was due to the valve failing or just kids letting air out you'd have to pay for a tyre you didnt really need.

The upside of course is you get more boot space.

Cheers,

Dave.
