Brake callipers upgrade
Discussion
I am about to buy some Granada Scorpio callipers and am told they have 60mm pistons. I have been too lazy to measure accurately the pistons on my S1 (and the car is at Guglielmi`s at the moment), but but a rough measurement would suggest they are 50mm. Can anyone confirm this either way, or if thet have fitted the above callipers to their car, have there been any issues. As far as I understand it, all S series came with the same callipers, and that they are shared with the Griffiths aswell?
Many thanks
Mark

This is very interesting for me also...
Do you think these ones fit my car ?

Those AP ones are 4 pot and very good looking with it. the number of pots will effect the calculations people are talking about here..
ie will going from 50mm to 60mm pistons mess up the brake balance of my car..
Anything can be made to fit if you have the funds and imagination.. I have Granada Cosworth fronts on mine and are putting Granada Cosworth rear disks on too.. I suspect I will get away with the fronts without too much setting up but going from drums to disks on the rear will certainly mess things up.. so I plan to fit a brake bias adjuster so the balance can be recitified should it not be too my liking..
Other things affect this too though.. on my Cossie I ordered some EBC pads (never again) they supplied Red (hard) for the front and Green (softer) for the rear which was their official reccomendation at the time.. result.. locks the rear wheel when breaking hard from cold.. thanks a lot for the near death experiance EBC.. lol...
Cheers

Hi everyone,
I'm going crazy with this problem of the breaks upgrade...
Everyone I ask does not know anything about the installable upgrades.....
On the Steve Heath TVR S series book I read of some people that made this upgrade,
in particular Peter Humphries...
Is it possible to talk with him to know exactly what to ask for ?

Hi
Hans contacted me when I asked some questions about upgrading my S2 brakes and he put together all the pieces I needed. I went for the slightly larger front disks and calipers and changed the rears from drum to disk.
The parts Hans put together for me were;
Front.
Good second hand callipers (I believe these are from a 2WD XR4i).
New ventilated 260mm dia ventilated front disks.
New standard brake pads.
Rear.
Good second hand callipers (I believe these are from a Granada cosworth but also on several other cars like the sierra cosworth etc.).
New ventilated 273x20 ventilated disks
New standard brake pads
2 cosworth bearing carriers (need these as they have the mounting bolts for the callipers) These are from the Granada coswoth.
2 New wheel bearings (these are bigger than original and needed because the Granada bearing carriers take these bigger bearings.
2 drive shaft ends (again off the Granada cosworth.
2 wheelflanges. From Granada cosworth but it must be from the 4 nut wheels (2.9-24v 94-99 model).
3 points to consider;
The drive shaft ends were turned on a lathe by Hans before I got them to take the diameter down slightly (needed to fit through the hole in our trailing arms). Easy job I’m not an engineer but they needed a little bit more off so I took them to a workshop and they took 3 minutes to take the extra 1mm off.
S1 & S2 trailing arms for the drum type brakes have not got the small bracket needed for disk installations to take the junction between the flexible hose and the rigid brake pipe. Its easy to bolt a small 'L' plate on.
The rear handbrake cable has the wrong ends on the cable for callipers. A new cable was available from TVRCar parts (as used on the S4 and V8S cars).
Here is a photo of all the bits I bought from Hans.

Do you actually need that???????????????
Could you be wasting money??????????
Yes you are right...Could you be wasting money??????????
Surely I don't need these, but I don't like those micro discs...
But, do you think that apart from the money, I'll have problems with the breaks Will be the car totally unbalanced ?
Your other post relates to the value of your car which I would imagine would be very good if original and would reduce if considered "messed about with". I'm not suggesting the brake upgrade would definitely reduce the value (particularly if they are good quality parts and done well and are all bolt-on and could be returned to original spec) but I think they might.
For most of us it does not matter one jot, but you do appear to have something rather special/scarce and it would be a pity if it lost its true character
All just my opinion of course...

You are right, It is also my interest to maintain the car original, but this upgrade is a reversible mod.For most of us it does not matter one jot, but you do appear to have something rather special/scarce and it would be a pity if it lost its true character

I will store the original calipers and disks, and replace the new with the original when I will sell it...
The mod is reversible, isn't it ?
