I am having a problem with the lights on my cerb. I noticed the headlights come on when the ignition is switched on, i then noticed i had a burnt wire on the main supply to the lights switching unit in the boot.. see pic..

On my way home last night my headlights started to flicker (Main beam ok) so i stoped and decided it would be a good idea to disconnect this as i was getting concerned about the heat and condition of this wire. With this box disconnected the headlights (front only) still worked.

about ten mins later i lost all lights - so stopped again and this time another unmarked box was very hot so i disconnected it. However i am not sure what it is or is supposed to do - i dosen't look like a tipical tvr control box and since its been disconnected i can get no headlights even with the other box plugged back in i can only have side lights or main beam.

if anyone can shed any light on it (no pun intended!) it would be much appreciated..

Been a long time since I looked at those boxes at the back, but it's not the dim dip relay box is it?

Btw, that burnt wire is a very common thing! I think the gauge of wire they used for the headlights was right on the border of what was needed, so as the wire ages and corrodes slightly, the resistance goes up and it burns.

Dim Dip box is similar looking to the lights switching unit, mine has this box marked only as ECU on a similar sticky label but i have no idea what its for.

Sorry

From the wiring diags, the box with the blackened wire is the main lighting control box (edit: well duh, it says that on it! I should look at labels as well as wires...). The red/yellow wire that's blackened is the dip beam supply that runs to to dim-dip control box. The box with 6 spade connectors is the dim-dip unit.

I've not been inside either dim-dip box, so I don't know their purpose, sorry.

Heat like that specifically around the connector implies poor conduction through the connector, so you might find that carefully cleaning both sides up will improve matters. That is, unless it's had implications...
