Could anything south of the River really be classed as London at all?

People posting here who have clearly never been to London or are looking for excuses to overcharge customers! Wanstead is Central London? It’s 9 miles from Trafalgar Square!

Zone 1 or Congestion Charging Zone.

Just spent 3 days in Central London - fantastic place.

For me personally, “central London” is the square mile, what comes to most people’s mind, seems to be Westminster, and a narrow strip out to Tower Bridge in the East. If it ain’t EC, it ain’t actual central London. I stop calling London ‘London’ at Camden, Putney, and Brick Lane, Stratford and Hackney Marshes would be inside my border as well, anywhere further South than Brixton isn’t either, in my book.

No. If you want to go small scale I would say the West End. The actual centre is located on a corner of The Strand and Charing Cross Road.

Thanks for the big-up, as a real Londoner I appreciate it when people like my home town, and say so, my take on Central London would be anywhere inside the Congestion Zone.
As for places like Wanstead, which is a nice area by the way, I think that anyone who lives there, and says that they live in London, is delusional, or at the very least, a wannabe.
Likewise Welling, it comes under the auspices of the London Borough of Bexley, but we all know it as Kent.
Croydon, that will always be Surrey to me.
Dagenham, Dagenham? gimme a break, you need a passport to go out that far, but it got the nod when it came under the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, (I think that they have an embassy in Belgravia).

as a londoner for me The Square mile is the City, ie covered by City Police so what was the City before it moved out into the Docklands!

Couldn't agree more, but they're expanding the congestion charge zone aren't they which will include places like Bayswater, Nottinghill, Kensington Knightsbridge which are all West London ffs

I'd agree with that, although the City is definitely part of Central London.

Zone 1 - Central London
Zone 2 - Greater London
Zone 3-6 Outer London

Everything else? Well nothing of significance exists beyond that so we’ll just call it the wastelands.

Greater London is anywhere in a London Borough. The London Boroughs are split between inner ant outer, as per the list posted earlier. Within the inner London boroughs, what constitutes central London is a matter of personal opinion.

I know exactly where you mean, and technically you’re spot on, but Charing X Road ends at The Portrait Gallery, just past Irving Street, and becomes St. Martin’s Place, meeting Strand at Trafalgar Square.

I was always told that when you're driving around the country, and you see a sign with the miles to London, that was measured to Charing Cross. True or not, I'm not sure.

IMHO Central London is Westminster out to Holborn Viaduct ( as was ), never goes South of the river.
Goes no further north than Clerkenwell.

The City is the City of London, East of the City is East London before morphing into Essex.
South London peters out gradually from Lewisham down to Mottingham. After that its the suburbs and Kent.

I have no idea about the West / North London wastelands.

I saw Chislehurst being described as South London recently, the house prices must have halved on that news alone!

You wouldn't say the London Eye or The Globe Theatre are in Central London? I've never heard anyone describe the London Eye as being in south London, even though it's south of the river.
