Hi all you sophisticated London types,

I will hopefully be starting a job in Canary Wharf sometime in early 2006 and have been looking at places to live nearby or within easy reach. After some research I thought that Bermondsey might be a good bet. It's easy to reach canary wharf and central london on the jubilee line. I have looked at deptford too but thought that it might be harder to reach central parts from there. What do you think? I'll initally be renting and reckon I'll be able to afford about £700pcm max, which seems reasonable from some flatshare websites I've seen.

Any feedback at all would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Hope your not thinking of living in Deptford and staying late to impress the boss, whilst starting this new job in winter!
I wouldn't fancy being in that area during the hours of darkness (or broad daylight come to think of it!!!)

right, so deptford is no then. I like to be somewhere I can go out for a beer in the evening and I don't fancy my chances of an impeccable Neo impression. What about Bow, is that better?

edited to say: It's Simon, must be signed in as my dad.

Have a look at the Isle of Dogs, plenty of new (and old) flats available for rent - not that nice an area but its on the river and super convenient for the Wharf. Others: Canning town (some parts need avoiding), Greenwich

I lived in Bow for 3 years with no issues at all. There's a few places to go now they've finished the green bridge and there's always the Pub in the Park in Victoria Park and the Fat Cat cafe.

If you want convenience for canary wharf and would like to avoid being shot or mugged by the locals may I suggest millenium quay on the deptford/greenwich border, 5 minutes walk from cutty sark (greenwich town centre) DLR station and a very nice private development..there's a few rooms being advertised in the corner shop there for £500 per month I believe

oh and you get awesome views of where you'll be working!

I would have thought £700 pcm may be pushing it though?

Best thing to do is pick up a copy of the Wharf free local paper and have a look in the classifieds.

Thanks for all of this guys. It's been lots of help. Did a quick search on Narrow Street. £3000 a week!! Wow!! I'm down either later this week or early next week for the second interview so I'll get a copy of the free paper and go and have a scout around. That development sounds perfect minimax, I'll look into that too.

Hi again,

I settled on somewhere in Greenwich in the end, with a little bit of a nudge from a mate. I found the place in The Wharf so thanks again for that gem. Looking forward to my new job and shedding just a small tear at the thought of never seeing daytime tv again.

Welcome to a very nice part of the world Simon. Nice drinking, lovely walks nearby, and, best of all, our very own tunnel to play with.

PM me after next week, and I'll take you for a pint in the Greenwich Park Bar & Grill. V V Nice place, also nice views

sounds like a great idea, just as long as it's not in the hardy (what a dive!) how about the union? they have very good beer foods a bit poncey though.. alternatively the pub next to the cutty sark? (can't remember it's name!)

Could organise drinks in the wharf too, if there are enought people around. The wapping centre of gravity may have shifted a tad
