Best place to live in Gateshead area

I am looking at moving to this area over the next 6 months. I brief experience of the area mainly the low fell area on Durham road. This seems a quite up market area and a good place to live. I have been told to avoid areas live Sherriff Hill, dunston and Teams. Any advice welcome.

I lived in Low Fell for 4 years and thoughly enjoyed it. Anywhere within 5 mins walking distance of the high street is ideal as you have all the shops but more importantly the pubs and takeaways/restaurants aswell.

There are other nice areas of course (Festival Park, Norwood, Whickham etc.) but equally there are many not so nice bits too, thing is as nice as your immediate area might be you will never be more than a mile from a slightly suspect area - thats no matter where you live though, not just Gateshead.

Low Fell is fairly upmarket and near to Saltwell Park, if you like a bit of greenery/walks etc. A bit further afield, but I'd also have a look at Whickham/Ryton/Winlaton/Blaydon areas, good access to the A1 if you're using a car.

As a rule of thumb try to stay far away from the metro line which runs Heworth...Felling...GatesheadStadium...Gateshead, as thats where most of the not-so-nice parts are. (IMO)

Eighton Banks is a very nice Village with a few decent pubs,Birtley is also worth a punt as it has plenty of shops and the local schools are very good,currently a lot of new builds on the northside area very close to the A1.Also agree with SeanyD on the Saltwell Park area of Gateshead especially since the park had £M's spent on it.

Best areas are Low Fell, Saltwell Park / Road area, Lobley Hill, Eighton Banks, Whickham, Ryton (albeit a bit out in the sticks).

Worst areas IMO are probably Bensham, Teams (esp. where the two high rise flats are), Dunston (area around the Rocket), Gateshead town centre(!), Felling, Old Fold, East Gateshead, Leam Lane & Springwell Estate.

Generally speaking I'd say by and large, the East End of Gateshead is worse than the West End, a lot of the East end is pretty grim.

The others are probably somewhere in between.

I used to live in Kibblesworth, village just south west of the team valley. Quite, nice people, just an old pit village and only 2 miles from the A1.

Thanks for all your advice, I have started looking at properties in the low fell area along durham road, some nice flats at a development called forster court. I did look at a flat near the tyne on the Staithes development, its right on the river with great views but there is nothing outside of the development and their are no shops in the small development or pubs. Right outside is a dodgy looking area...I think that may be teams? So low fell it is. Thanks.

Good choice. Really handy for the town as well.

The area next to the Staithes would be Teams, and yes its a bit of a dump. You're better off in the 'fell IMHO.

I am a cop in gateshead, so any queries re areas, give me a shout. I did a belly laugh when i saw someone saying its good to live close to Gateshead High street, honestly the place is a sthole, no decent shops just dodgy kebab shops and charity shops. All the pubs are full of chavs and scruffy munters. Honestly the area should be demolished. I would also avoid birtley, a grey souless place that has nothing at all going for it.

Some of the nicer areas are Low fell, Whickham, and then a bit further out to Ryton and Crawcrook. For shopping theres always the metrocentre which has everything you need.

Chowdene estate, off chowdene bank is nice (good schools if thats a requirement) The Fisher estate at the bottom of chowdene bank which backs onto the railway lines is also quiet but gets the through traffic from kids going to school twice per day.

Lyndhurst estate adjacenet to the top of chowdene bank / Kells lane is also nice (next to craigylee nursing home)

whickham is overated and very expensive and a slob to get in and out of in rush hour

Bottom of harlow green lane next to the school on both sides of the road are also OK.

The above are probably the nicest areas of Low fell with reasonable prices.

Valley drive low fell is nice, top of saltwell park, lyndhurst gardens is also nice.

The estate next to the ninepins (near the crematorium) is also very quiet and bypassed these days.

Further afield. Ouston isn't bad and good value housing.

I would highly recommend Urpeth Grange,even though technically it is in County Durham.The only downside is, the facilities are not that good. (it has only one pub and one shop)
A quiet housing estate with plenty of countryside around it.(ideal for walking/cycling)
It also has some good driving roads near it,a plus point for a 'Pistonheader'
Approximately 5 miles south of Team Valley,it is ideally located for A1, either north or south.
A good mix of properties,from 2 bedroomed flats up to 5/6 bedroomed detatched.

I grew up around there, and would agree with most of what you say, but I'd probably try and get a place in the main village if you can as it does have better facilities and public transport links, should you need them.

Its surprisingly easy to get from Ouston to Newcastle - 30 minutes by bus, and usually no more than that by car even when its really busy, 10 - 15 if its not. Yet everyone thinks its out in the sticks; not true, my parents house is but a mere 10 minutes walk from the boundary of Gateshead (Birtley).

Pretty quiet area. The pubs are ste though.

If you were prepared to move to Ouston, then you may as well move to the far superior Chester-le-Street. Obviously avoid the Avenues but everywhere else is ok, Waldridge area is especially good . You would be closer to the A1 and you have far better transport links to Newcaca, Durham, Sunderland. A lot more pubs, shops not particularly good, but which small towns have decent shops now?

Trust me, it takes a lot longer to get from Chester to Newcastle by bus or car at rush hour than from Ouston (or any other time for that matter).

The only way you'd have an advantage in chester is if you wanted to go to durham (fair enough) or sunderland (why?)

There is a lot more on the doorstep guaranteed, but someone who wants to live in the gateshead area may just about consider ouston as its right outside of the boundary but chester is a good few miles past.

Also you'd get a lot more house for your cash in ouston than in chester.

Don't need to trust you at all. I know the area quite well It was only a suggestion if the op was prepared to move out that far. Also IIIRC the bus times for Chester to Newcastle and Ouston to Newcastle are near identical.The advantage being a bus leaves Chester every 10 mins whereas it's 30 mins from Ouston. If you live in Urpeth I don't even think there is a bus from there to Newcastle.
