Leeds to Nottingham - interesting routes??

I have to collect the car in a couple of weeks to bring it down to uni, but I can't face the boredom induceing stupor of the M1 on a Sunday afternoon!

Can anyone suggest an roads that I should try and include? I am thinking of going the Derbyshire route through the Peak district, good idea or not, what do you think?

Any suggestions welcomed, can't wait to get back in the car again!

No real obvious route is there? If you're interested in the Peak District, how about the following, btw I've assumed you're on your own in the car, so you will have to map read and drive at the same time, so have tried to keep it simple:

If you look at a road map: head down M1 and come off at J37 nr. Barnsley. Head west on A628 and pick up A616 after approx 9 miles. Pick up the minor little lane heading south-east from Langsett. Then once past an initial little complication of lanes in the first mile, just keep heading south. All you have to do is turn right at every junction, or leave a lane to your left - 'miss a left' as we say in road rally parlance. Due to the fact that there is nothing but moor to your west, you can't go wrong.

This will take you over the strines moor, its a great road, and a small hatch (going by your profile) will be ideal for it.

This will bring you down to the A57. Turn right (west) and go to Ladybower reservoir, then contine south on the A6013. Then you'll have to do a bit of homework - write down a list of villages and/or road numbers to hack through heading south eastish to Nottingham. Something like Hathersage, B6001 to Calver, Baslow, B6012 past Chatswoth, (very picturesque) then A6 to Matlock. The A6 is always too busy to spend much time on, so from Matlock take the A615 to Wessington then Alfreton. Then if you can pick it up, from Alfreton you can follow the B600 all the way into Nottingham.

The Strines road is great, especially if you get a nice bit of weather. Can be quite dramatic if you don't. Strines Inn is an intersting place for a break.

Or if you're really feeling adventurous you could take the A628 then B6015 to Glossop, then take the Snake Pass to Ladybower rezzer. Cracking road, but can be busy, and perhaps frustrating if you've not much poke to overtake. Perhaps you should do it on a Sunday morning instead.

Long way round, of course, but good.

If you do go in the afternoon, I'd pick the Strines route.

Thanks for those ideas, sounds like a very good idea. I can overtake given the chance, but the car is a bit gutless sometimes!
