Any suggestions? I need a new compressor sourcing and fitting who will charge a fair price.

Thanks

I don't think you need a specialist. This is the type of work my local Halfords would undertake for a fixed price. Have you tried somewhere like that? The Redditch branch gets all my custom these days - except for the gearbox fluid for our Mercedes (plural).

Thanks for the tip. In the meantime I've sounded out a local garage to see if they will be be amenable to fitting a compressor I source from ECP.

My old ML's turbo was on the way out. Replacement was circa £3K. I asked if Halfords could source an exchange. After some digging they agree they could source and fit a limited-warrantied exchange for £1200.

Definitely worth asking this kind of garage. I hear a lot of people complain about these generic garages but I've always gone in with an open mind and I've been specific about what I want, spending the time getting them to confirm they're happy to undertake work.

I've had a steering rack replaced, springs and dampers, brake callipers discs and pads, an exhaust, a Subaru cambelt (one garage was too scared to do this), an alternator, and the old piece of welding. That's apart from the usual servicing.

What attracts me to a particular garage is their willingness to have a go, coupled with the sort of noises that gives me confidence in their abilities. It's a bit like an interview dressed up as a pub conversation.

And usually you get the work at a fixed price, quoted up front. Once, when they were unable to rebuild a pair of brake callipers (too corroded), they had to send away for new ones which weren't readily available. In the end, the work took nearly a week (mostly because of the supply chain) and required a lot of effort on their behalf. They stuck to their original quote, so I contributed towards their Christmas party as a thank you (well deserved), and after that I was remembered and treated as a preferred customer.

It's the little things...

Thank you. Current garage are trustworthy but do not appear to have much air con experience having only just got the machine.

I will try the place in Redditch.

This is handy. I posted in General Gassing asking for recommendations on an air-con place in the Midlands (I should of looked here first)...this guy is right around the corner from where I work too, bonus! I'll give him a bell this week and see if he can get my air-con working in my E36 smile
