I went on a very interesting history tour of Sneinton a few weeks ago. Lots of fascinating stuff to look at.

I don’t know if Arthur Seaton had a car, but if he did, it’d be brown.
It’s NOT brown.
Seems to be a recurring claim hehe

Yes it was.
Our hero - Arthur Seaton is shown meeting his lady friend on the Nottingham Castle terrace overlooking the Meadows.
Back in the day, it was railway marshalling yards and industrial workshops with steam engine smoke mixing with the coal fired chimneys of the terrace houses.
All that has gone now, replaced by the Castle Marina business / retail park and HMRC complex soon to be University teaching space.
In the Raglan Road pub there's a great still of Arthur running up Derby Road (near where the pub is now)

People were living in the Hermitage until the '60s. Nice views from the windmill yes

Yes I remember it being a bit grim and depressing. I live in Bridgford so know the area well. As you say it’s all changed now. Didn’t know Castle Marina was a railway yard. Most of the industry has now gone, I used to go into Royal Ordanance which is now all units and car garages.
I was back in Notts on Monday for the football, I drove along Castle Boulevard for the first time in about 15 years, that’s changed a hell of a lot!

And bloody electric scooters everywhere!

Until recently we owned a property on the Hermitage, backing onto the cliffs. In the cliff was a doorway with metal door, leading to an air raid shelter that accommodated 400 people. On Manor St, in the middle of the road, is a manhole slightly larger than normal. Beneath it is a ladder into the shelter.

We also used to own properties on Colwick Road and every third had a reinforced cellar ceiling as a shared shelter for the adjacent properties.

I need to meet someone tomorrow night for a business meeting. In Nottingham.

I'll have a lot of papers with me, so not somewhere with tiny tables like the tapas places have.

Can anyone think of anywhere suitable?

Brown's is not a bad shout.

The Roundhouse is a bit soulless but it's usually quiet with decent sized tables.

Fothergills?

Post bump; seems my son has found a girl in Nottingham so thinking about an overnight there coming up from Cardiff. Any recommendations of things to do for a middle aged couple with a 13yo in tow whilst the eldest does his thing?

Masses of sporty things if that’s your bag. Maybe a cave tour, underground golf, horse racing, ice skating?

Good shout by the way. Can’t imagine my parents driving me 130 miles for a jump, then hanging about.

biggrin

That would very much depend upon what you enjoy doing,

Cave tour,
Galleries of justice (very good).
Contemporary art gallery
Djanogly art gallery (check what is on)
Walk around University lake.
Theatre / Convert Hall/ Motorpoint Arena / Playhouse (check what is on).
Nottingham Castle
Peggys Skylight (Middle Eastern food and live Jazz)
Wollaton Hall
Newstead Abbey

And, being a car fan site we should mention Donington is only 30 minutes away. Might be something on.
