Nottingham... and do you love your city?

Something big going off in the city centre this morning. Trams suspended, bus station closed, heavy Police presence and several areas cordoned off.

Someone at work has said there's been some stabbings, some folk ran over and a bloke in a van shot with a taser after carrying a large rambo knife and backpack. 3 people dead.If you can get to the story through the ads:

Shocking.
I had to make my way around all the cordons & finished up on Bentinck Road. I think in the end that's the very street where they captured the suspect.
It's all horrendous.
Ah, one of our chaps said they'd cordoned off part of Hyson Green. That'll be why.I had to make my way around all the cordons & finished up on Bentinck Road. I think in the end that's the very street where they captured the suspect.

I haven't had my lunch yet, will I still be able to get to Hockley?

If not, I continue up to the Old Angel, turn right, left, up to Heathcoat Street and park there. If that fails, outside Prysm (The Palais de Danse to you Gramps).

The whole situation yesterday was very sad. The two youngsters were from my alma mater and I can't help but think Nottingham University (and the Trent) will be crossed off the list for a lot of undergraduates this year.
Whilst there is no legislating for incidents like yesterday's, the city has been in decline for a long time and desperately needs a kick in the arse.
It saddens me to read of the decline of the city in general. Yesterday's incident could've happened anywhere but another most unwelcome development in a place with which I still have quite an affinity.
I used to live in the house circled red and worked in the establishment circled blue back in my university days. Very happy times.

I agree Mallard, I'm feeling slightly ill thinking about the tragic incident yesterday. For the students and the other guy, the school caretaker. What a tragic waste of life. Had a similar incident where I live now just after lockdowns, people stabbed and killed at random in a public park in Reading. There but for the grace of *insert any deity you believe in/fate here*.
I was at Nottingham University, a long time ago now, and of course lived near where this incident took place yesterday, as most students of that establishment do. Was advised very early on to avoid the area near the Tally Ho (is that still there?), which I mostly did. I worked in The Grove on Castle Boulevard and the Baltimore Exchange at the marina (was brand new then). Whilst it wasn't a hugely safe place even then, and several people I knew had incidents on the streets (including me - I had a burglary whilst I was in the house, had a car stolen and another one vandalised, had our bins at the back door of the flat set on fire, probably other things I've forgotten too), it's still shocking to see something this devastating happen. Those poor, poor kids and their families.
With teenagers myself now, one of whom will be going to University this or next year, it does make you stop and think about where to encourage them to go, or indeed discourage them from going. But when similar things happen in their home town, who is to say where should and shouldn't be avoided.

Yes, Bannock. I may be guilty of rose-tinted specs as your post reminded me of a few incidents back in the early 2000s. My girlfriend at the time was on a four year course and I had completed a three year degree. One night my lovely new BMW 3 series company car was parked outside her student gaff and someone came and scratched every panel. Shortly after that she had gone home with a headache one afternoon and woke to find two local ne'er-do-wells in her bedroom with hands full of her property. Fortunately they were only burgling and didn't attack her but it was still sickening. The a couple of weeks later a body was found with axe wounds to the head in the alley round the corner. It's always happened.

Awful incident, but will be s shame if "Nottingham" gets a reputation for this, truth is it could have happened anywhere, if there is an evil person on the prowl (Clapham Common etc).Thankfully these are rare, but not much help to the families to know this.
