it's only £686 fully comp with 3 points and 5 years NCB on a VX

plus when I do bust it the VX is going to be easier on the wallet to fix

bargain thats about the same as the cerb.

out of curiousity how was insurance on the westie when you had it. I'm still hankering after a 7 but i'm looking at mini's with urges to strip it out and rebuild it with carbon fibre bits and tuned engine. the 7 route has the RWD factor and donuts though.

at age 19 1700cc crossflow with a certified 128bhp value 5k and no NCB applicable it was £228 in a dodgy postcode in newcastle so I shouldn't think it'll be that much for something special like a JPE caterham or an R500

i'd let you have a go in my mini if it was working, a tuned mini is just so much fun!

Hi tom, if your going to Newcastle you should have a look at this.I'm scared that if you don't buy it I might.
(I'm putting a shot of your beetle on the bband t 05 thread in a minute).
I had a sit in a vx220 when I got dawns corsa sxi, it's a lot nicer interior than the lotus eqivalent it's a 2.0 turbo but the tank is tiny (range 130miles)and the luggage space needs its own special case as it's 2ftx2ftx3ft.

I tried to get in one once - difficult even with the roof off and you're much taller and broader than I am. How on earth did you manage it?

As for the small tank - they don't want you to drive it too far too often and if you happen to be on a longish trip it's probably a good idea to be forced to get out every 2 hours or so just to check you still can!

Of course in the case of minimax, taking likely fuel consumption into account, that would be about avery 70 miles for a fill - so approximately every half an hour on a longish run ...

Maybe it is possible to do without luggage and have an extra bag tank fitted?

I managed to get in a lotus exige on my 40th, they are smaller still and hardtop.(I had to crawl out of it though).

The only reason we had the 111R over the VX was because there was no aircon or face vents in the VX.

I can see Tom in an S2 far more clearly than the VX but saying that that insurance quote would sway me towards the VX too

Tom

Having looked through the classifieds on PH an S2 is about 16k cheapest normally about 18K for 18k you can get a 256bhp tuned VXT which would knock spots of my 111r(in a straight line)

I would go for the VX mate. Have a drive in both. The VX handling is not quite as good as the Lotus but there isn't that much in it. The Turbo engine is good with lots of mod ability although the airsensor is a bit brittle.

On a side if you want to go out for a passenger trip in the 111r just give us a bell and you can drop in one evening.

Hi james, i'm giving biased advice here as I had a ride in Byff's cerby at bbandt05, awesome car(loudest car at pistonfest last year)I would buy it myself but 41 is probably too old to be single.
I can see tom in a mad car like that spitting flames on the overrun round nottingham

Now for a few words from the other side of the world!!!

It has to has to has to be a VX220 Turbo for sure! I have been out in these cars on the motorway, A and B roads and round a track all day in a few of them and they are great. Cheaper to buy and insure than an Elise and IMO they look better too! I want one when I graduate from uni for sure (in a few years maybe!)
Try www.vx220.org.uk for all sorts of info on the cars and plenty of friendly owners and meets coming up!

On the other hand, you could get an MX5 and tune it up through Performance 5 to make it a more serious proposition - check out the one in evo magazine's track car feature!

Or go really sensible and get an E55AMG Merc or an E34 M5 3.8! You may even stretch to an early E39 M5 at that money!

Lots of choice, but which to go for???

Happy hunting mate

oh the test, the test drive!!!

fantastic! is the best way to describe it, it was very odd going quickly but not hearing anything in the way of sound effects, bar the limiter

took out a 111R and a 111S k-series (I think???) the difference was marked above about 4000rpm but under that they were both quite docile.

been so busy at work and travelling to newcastle I'm hardly having time to post! i'm test driving a vx220 on thursday

further updates pending!

Personally would probably go with the S2000 or the VXT.

GTVs aren't reliable... even for Alfas they're pretty bad.

£15-16k will get you a Japanese (still RHD tho) 350Z. £1-2k more will get you a UK spec one

Similarly, you're verging on M5 territory. And RX8s. And early XKRs. Hell, an XJR or an S-Type R would be fantastic fun, too, and less cash.

Others: Z3M. E55 AMG (www.pistonheads.com/sales/44566.htm ) Mid-90s Corvette. (Grimaces...) Scoobies & Evos. MG ZT V8. Something "really sensible" like a V6 Clio/Megane 225/Audi S3. (This 888 Astra Turbo: www.pistonheads.com/sales/42647.htm )

You could, alternatively, spend a lot less on something that's still "reliable" (compared to the sh*t you normally buy ), but just has higher servicing costs (so it'll work out the same in the long run). BMW 850s, Lotus Elans, etc. spring to mind.

Too tired to think of any more tonight!

My god JSG, that is some list of cars, I had never realised all the possibilities out there for 15 grand! Looks like Tom should be able to get something sensible, but I doubt that he will somehow

I've just had a thought Tom. There's a mate of yours got a 150mph Saab convertible(swedish babe magnet), and if he was selling it to you, you would have £5k left to spend on the booze and the birds it would attract to you
