Tom,
First off you have to establish there is a fault, that's easy. We all know that. Then you have to establish blame which may not be so easy even though it appears obvious. Thing is, it depends on what you asked him to do (your contract) and how you can prove your contract and thus liability.
My guess is you asked him to do work and to do that work he removed your suspension etc. Key to the contract will be witmesses, invoices, notes you made at the time, receipts etc.
Where is your car? The AA have experts who can determine the cause of a fault and they have laborities behind them. They proved my blown turbo was down to an oil supply problem due to a duff supply hose. They even photographed the inside of an 8mm hose! I was well chuffed.
Lets chat about this and I'll see if I can help with some advice
