Funny though isn't it, you can be doing 140+ on the main drag, yet ease off and slow well in advance, without even touching the brakes, down to a very low speed for anyone emerging from that exit, because as has been said, there's nowhere to go if someone pulls out, you need to be able to pull up/stop. So if double the National speed limit is no big deal on the deserted straight, and slowing to half the posted speed limit or even less is sensible for the slip, just what exactly are the speed limits for?

I think so. I mean as you come off of that roundabout to go towards codnor opposite direction from m1 very sudden give way onto the 60mph.
I know where you mean. Some of the numpties come to a dead stop before pulling out onto the carriageway in front of you. Iirc the limit there is 70 and yet at the other end of the road by the M1 it's 40. Absolutely barking! It may be a road split between two authorities.

The Langley Mill/Eastwood island is the Notts/Derbys border for the purposes of that road.

^ Thanks. I thought it could be as it's derbyshire. I was along there the other day. Arrived at about 70 mph and slowed down to something sensible. I meant to look for a nsl sign but didn't notice one. Presumably it must become a 60 somewhere just before the langley mill roundabout. It would be better if one day the extended the length of the lane coming off the roundabout so cars could merge into the carriageway more safely.

Happy Otter, what car do you drive if I may ask?

Sorry, I meant your work car. I'm more likely to notice you if it's traffic or something concealed.

It very much depends on who's grabbed the keys to what first!

There's three advanced drivers on my shift and only one advanced car to share. Probably 25% V70 to 75% Focus panda. All are fully liveried.

I'm not a traffic cop, we don't have a dedicated traffic department here but rather a dual role traffic/armed response section. I don't want to go on there for personal reasons, i'm more than happy as a response bobby.

It just seems daft when you can do three or four times the posted speed limit along there, and it's such a non event that it's not even worth bragging rights.

Every now & then you read a thread over in SP&L about someone getting caught doing 90 or 100 in a 40 or a 50 and I think, well, you deserve it. But I guess this is one of those roads that makes it clear that it's not always the case.
If you really think there is a difference between travelling 90 or 100 mph in a 40 or a 50 on this road and another road, then you're wrong. A 40mph is a 40 mph, whether or not you think its appropriate or not is another matter. I believe that the reason for the 40 mph speed limit is because of the village of Kimberly, which the road passes straight through. You cannot see the village because the trees block your view. But that does not stop the traffic noise and pollution, hence the reason for such a low limit. I think it should be 50 mph, but i'd still stick to 40, because its the law.

No attacks for reviving such an old post please

^ You're probably correct. The sunlight can effect vision as you come over the hill but you'd expect a competent driver to drive sensibly if he can't see properly. Also, near the bridge the central reservation doesn't have any barriers so a car could cross the carriageway. Why not add a barrier? The daft thing is the reduced limit goes on for ages and you get fkwits/numptys doing 40 mph in the outside lane because they feel they can do that in either lane. Or they do 40 in the nearside lane and then pull out in front of a car doing 70-100 plus. This is a really nice bit of road that's ben made far more dangerous imo by silly speed limits.
Of course they can do 40 in the outside lane, providing they are overtaking. Both lanes have the same speed limit

I can see the point, a little, at the M1 end.
But when heading away from the M1 towards Ripley,
scratchchin Other then temp/variable limits....can a road have one speed limit on one side, and another on t'other?
For a long time, the old road approaching Manchester airport showed a limit of 50 one way, 30 the other way and, further along, 30 one way and 40 the other way.

This was, however, after some temporary road alterations, and I think they forgot to change the signs...

I was hoping to get a ticket and opt for Court, but it wasn't to be...hehe

It's a little disturbing that traffic police didn't bring this to the notice of the relevant authority.
I know of two such roads with permanent split limits in the E. Mids area, both dual carriageways. One's 40/50 (A453), the other's 70/50 (A50).

Aha...which stretches of said roads? I'll try 'em out!
A453 where it joins the modern bit of the ring road just north of Clifton, A50 by M1 J24 smile
Adding to the thread resurrection, A52 Bardills Roundabout, either side, in Nottingham. Has 40mph approaching either side, NSL leaving the roundabout. Not many drivers pay much attention to the 40, good sighted on approach imo so can't blame them. Just watch for the queues...

Wasn't the 40 and (later 50 nearer Ikea junction onwards towards Langley Mill) introduced because it was a horrendous accident black spot and also attracted street racing?

And yes, street racing could still take place but the penalties being much higher if caught so therefore a deterrent.
