I'm looking for some recommendations for good mountain bike routes around the south west that I haven't tried, some nasty downhill stuff would be great!

Any PHers got some good spots they'd like to share within about two hours or so from Plymouth?

Thanks

The mad tw@t I work with is in to all that malarky.

I'll mail you his email. He goes up on the Quantocks and Mendips.

Hi Corin,

I have plenty of ideas for you - you the Quantocks forst off, but the runs are short.

You also have Blanford Forum, a PAYG type area, but the riding is V Good.

Another place is Combe Sydenham - a favourite of mine, which was used for the NPS race in the last couple of years.

EMail me if you want more!!! We could arrange some riding - there is a short course race this Sunday at Cheddar if you are interested!

Lee woods and Ashton court by Clifton suspenshion bridge. been their a few times. Some nice downhills and great senery over bristol. well worth a ride.
best of all was riding back up to the top of the bridge once you hammered down. Only 300Feet climb. Needed a few fags when I got to the top

Well worth a try Corin

Where's that?

As has been mentioned there's a trail around Ashton Court and 50 acre wood, but it's a bit contrived in places and not very technical. There are some good sections in Leigh Woods, some of which are a bit under developed (ie swamp-like)

The mendips were quite a laugh, especially with the drops into the Cheddar Gorge and Burrington Combe.

I tend to head for South Wales for single track, but that's probably a bit far for you.

Blanford Forum is over by Dorchester (which BTW is surrounded by some CRACKING B roads).

It was race I went to recently as a part of the NACC season - oh the hilarious fun of a tractor getting stuck on the uplift).

I think a SW DH/Freeride/Bimble could be arranged methinks

Theres some small trails in Hanham woods, (Bristol)i ride there most weekends, its kind of a loop that follows the river tow path from Conham to the lock n weir pub at hanham, a few beers then aloung the top path through the woods, theres then loads of downhill jump bits leading up the hill, when your bored with that you can crack on to where you started & have a few more beers in the Bull pub. Good ride, few beers, what more do you want, even better when its 5 mins from where you live.

Theres a race at Cheddar did someone say this weekend?

This probably isn't much help, but there is a race every year somewhere in Plymouth.

Can't remember the location, but it has the most wicked downhill I've seen. A b**tard to walk up and a sharp left hander at the bottom (or a wood if you miss the turn).

That'll be Newnham - a XC race course with the infamous 'Pipeline' which is deceptivly steep and dodgy.

I remember racing a XC sports race, and entertaining the crowd as I wa sof the few who actually went for it down there - most XCers can't ride for toffee and makes for boring viewing.

Until they hit the tree on the right that is (don't look at it!!!)

ooh get her!

I did the Newnham 90 last year. Quite a slog (but then maybe that's because I do more XC than downhill!)

I've ridden some good places around Bodmin which is a lot closer to you Corin. Trouble is I can't remember where! Mind you there were no tractors to pull us up the hills...

If you want to know more I'll ask my "riding buddy" who knows just about every decent place in D & C.

Corin,
there's a route in the current MBR. 13miles, from princetown out to burrator and back via nun's cross.
haven't been out there yet myself ( understand the line out from princetown is a bit on the rocky side, but the trail back up from burrator is pretty smooth gravel ).
give me a shout if you fancy it ( maybe one evening, now it's getting lighter? ), as the G/F and i need a push to get our lazy arses out there.
other than that there look to be some good riding around the warren house inn - to the east. lots of old mine workings and reasonably established tracks. again, number of 'mean downhills' limited i think.
there's also a short track around bell tor. just off the road which runs up from ashburton, through spitchwick towards princetown. car park at the top of the spitchwick hill, the track runs along, then down the hill behind the pub ( great views to vennford on 'tother side, quite bumpy in places ). then it's either back the way you've come or into the pub ( poundsgate? ) for a pint before a climb back up the road ( only a short run though - ideal for an evening quicky, you can start at the bottom for a lung-busting, then get thrown about coming back down ).

When I say most, I mean the roadies come XCers who crossed over.

THE MOST annoying type of rider...

I went down there yesterday afternoon & walked the track. As you'd expect it was pretty muddy, quite a slow slippery tight track, no real fast long bits but a few smallish jumps leading into well banked tight berms, if we get anymore rain then it will get really rutted in the practice, on the whole though it could be a good blast. Practice is on Sat so i may pop down then & see whats on. (check out the competition i mean!)

Do you fancy hooking up - my missus is working and I have a spare few hours - hopefully I'll have my new spring kit for my forks (i.e. so they will go up and down at last) - and I'd like to get a headstart on some people - I need it.

I think I might have just used my minus quota...
