Scameras cause accidents ?
Discussion
Nice to see I've started a healthy debate !
Compare and contrast.
1) Old bill in marked patrol car doing 65 in lane 1. Every body see's the guy well in advance and takes their foot off the gass. The guy tailgating me even backs off ! No brake lights, just a gradual reduction in speed.
2) Talivan parked on bridge. Not as visible, so everybody sees it at the last minute and the nervous ones brake. This is at best annoying and at worse, down right dangerous. Add rain and spray and it'even more fun.
I witnessed both the above today on the M4 in Wilts and it's fascinating to watch how drivers react to the 2 different scenarios.
Bottom line is most of us speed, but it does not make you a bad driver.
I'm old enough to remember when the BiB might pull you in for 80 - 90MPH to give you a ticking off but would let you go un endorsed if your driving was safe i.e good observation, correct distance, driving to suit the road conditions etc.
These vans do not detect bad drivers, drugged drivers, drunk drivers map readers etc and there seem to be fewer BiB on the Motorway.
Just my twopenneth for what its worth.
Cheers

Mark, I saw the talivan this afternoon too, coming home on the Westbound between 16 and 17. It was sat on the far side of the bridge at an angle so wasn't easily spotted, not sure if it was shooting at the West or East bound, but probably caught quite a few.
That's what makes me mad, alot of safe drivers will now have points for the offence of 'driving safely at 85 mph', bstad scamera scum.

Hi Deeps
That was the baby. I couldn't work out which way it was pointing either - can they shoot tboth ways at the same time ?
Judging by the angle of the bridge I think it was probably shooting the Eastbound traffic, even tho it was sat above the westbound carriageway.
I know sometimes they have a team of two operators but whether they have two sets of equipment I dont know. I wouldn't be suprised though, considering who they are.

Deeps,
sound like you do a similar commute to me : I join M5 at Junction 22 and travel to junction 18 of the M4, then do another 15 miles from there. Hell of a way but if that's where the job is.... Advantage for me is shift work, so I usually travel outside normal commuter times.
Anyway, do you know if they have Talivans between 18 and 17 on the M4 very often - as I sometimes have to go on to 17 ?

Hi yellowvette, I've seen a yellow vette a couple times, wonder if that's you, can't be many around here, looks lovely too.
I get on at 22 too, but could be going anywhere around the southwest, although I try damned hard to avoid SouthWales now, don't wanna give any business to them bstads as they try their sneaky hardest to screw you for 60 quid when you visit.
I've seen talivans occasionaly between 18 and 17 but not half so much as between 17 and 15.

If I was exceeding the limit that much, I most certainly wouldn't slam on my brakes as many seem to do - I'd try to slow down, but were I to get nabbed then so be it, better a couple of quid and a couple of points than twenty cars shunting behind me.
Are you a martyr? Make that 60 quid and three points and all whilst driving perfectly safely! There's justice!
If I may analyse you're statement, correct me if I'm wrong but you are infact agreeing that a talivan can cause twenty cars to shunt? So if it can cause that to happen but it's not their fault that's okay, their posistion is justified?

But it's a false argument saying if the van wasn't there it wouldn't cause an accident. If there were no traffic whatsoever and the motorway was a sealed tube that only you could drive on then there wouldn't be any accidents so should everything get banned?
Again, I'm talking about reality and you're statement is fictional. In my real world there is traffic and by adding artificial hazzards that cause panic braking the gain is what?

Hi Deeps,
Yup, if you're in the Burnham-on-Sea area then it's most likely my Vette you've seen. I know most Vette owners around here, especially earlier Vette's, and no - there aren't any other Yellow C3 Vettes locally as far as I know. If you see it again, you'll now it's mine if it has 18" polished Torq Thrust II wheels and is very, very loud ! (There are links to pics in my profile) Give me a wave if you see me, or come and have a chat if I'm parked. I'll keep my eye out for your RX7. I'm hoping to get out to a few more local events this year, if we get a decent summer.

Deeps - you and I are going round in circles here, with neither being convinced in the slightest by the other's arguments.
I will say one last thing before leaving it at that, and that is that you say:"correct me if I'm wrong but you are infact agreeing that a talivan can cause twenty cars to shunt? So if it can cause that to happen but it's not their fault that's okay, their posistion is justified?" Well, if something is not your fault then, by definition, it is not your fault.
