I still think Burrington Combe is a great road (especially since they re-surfaced it) followed by a blast along the dead straight Roman roads across the top then back down through Cheddar Gorge

But the crappy surface was part of the Burrington Coombe Experience, esp when trying to get up there at 7am - if I was stuck behind a truck I used to wait at the bottom for a while and catch it up as the road straightened above Blagdon. Great fun, far better than following the damn thing up the Coombe.
