Holy thread resurrection, Batman!

I moved to Bournemouth last May, so had no prior knowledge of this thread. Apologies for the resurrection, but I thought it better than starting another thread on the subject.

B3081 from near Ringwood up to Shaftesbury is fun (and scenic too!) - not done it for a while so hope it hasn't been cursed by speed limits.

Also slight deviation from Stone Cold's first route would be to take the B3089 through Hindon and Teffont back to Salisbury rather than the A303/A36.

Some great roads on Purbeck (test driven a few cars there) but wouldn't bother with the New Forest, too much traffic not enough fun smile
I went to Shaftesbury this Sunday just gone, with my wife. We drove up via Wimborne and Blandford on the A350. Not much fun to be had on that to be honest. But I let my wife navigate home, and she found the B3081, which I think is my new favourite driving road. Most of it is still NSL too, which makes for even more fun. Where limits are lower there's good reason for them to be, especially the 20 mph zone through Tollard Royal. To be fair, if there's anything coming the other way, 20 mph through that village would be wishful thinking anyway.

Wimborne to Blandford on the Badbury Rings Road, then the lower road to Shaftesbury then immediately right on to the Blandford high road, hang left up the infamous Zig zag hill. Zig Zag is fun, but in my opinion the real fun starts once you get clear of them, the fast flowing roads that follow them are a joy. So, on through Six Penny Handley to the roundabout, straight over across Cranborne Chase second left, then at the T-junction right towards Wimborne. This is one of my favourite roads, nice bit of twisty stuff and some nice straights to despatch the plodders. Then you have a choice, either left by the Horton Inn, through Horton, three Legged Cross, Moors Valley and back to the top of the Spur Road. Alternatively, follow the Cranborne Road back to Wimborne, equally fun. Shame jungle juice is so pricey these days, used to do this route a lot.
That's exactly the route (3-Legged X and Moors Valley) we took when my wife took control of the map and started calling the turns on the way back from Shaftesbury. The Zig Zag Hill was particularly entertaining, but yes, the whole route is a blast. She was a bit grumpy with me for the pace I made up the Zig Zag, but once we broke out over the top into open countryside the views were spectacular. And when we got beyond 6d Handley I knew where we were going anyway, as I've done some cycling out that way. So nice to find a road where some fun can be had, even in a lardy old Mondeo with a diesel motor in the front. We didn't encounter much traffic on a Sunday afternoon in February, at least not until we passed the entrance to Moors Valley at going home time.

Having cycled up the A350 from Blandford to Shaftesbury last year, before I knew better, I'm looking forward to another trip out that way, this time on the B3081, to cycle that Zig Zag too. I'll be sure to wear my PH cycle jersey when doing so... wink

Ha ha, retired cyclist here, lived in Dorset for 45 years now and I've ridden up and down pretty much every Dorset hill there is... the roads you mention are good but there are many many more... where are you based? A good route is from Wimborne, take the Cuthbury road just past the hospital, through Shapwick and all the way to Blandford. Then go from Blandford out on the country road which takes you towards Sturminster Newton. You go up and down Okeford hill and can veer off to the Fox pub at Ansty if you like where they used to brew their own beer at 8.4% Really good windy country road thats fairly free of traffic....

Driving wise we have some epic roads. The previously mentioned Six Penny to Cranborne Road is brilliant. I work in Salisbury and sometimes use it on the way home. Also worth turning left on the Cranborne Road towards Verwood, past Crane Valley Golf course as its a really good twisty B road.

Just be a bit careful on that road with the dips as you get nutters performing suicidal overtakes....I currently drive a MK1 Focus and those roads really showcase the good damping on that car. Watch for the pot-holes though as the roads have suffered with the winter rain...

Wow, this is a thread resurrection.

Funnily enough, I had to do an emergency run (don't ask) to Shaftesbury. It was just after one of the many recent storms, the roads were sodden, and yet I still managed to keep up a good pace and on the way back I got the rare privilege of a clear run at going up Zig Zag hill. It was a great drive.

If you like it twisty, the road that goes past the heavy horse centre into the back of Verwood is quick fix of fun.

After moving back to Bournemouth from Oxfordshire I have really been missing decent driving roads. I was literally less than mile from the road PH uses for many of the new articles frown (Chain Hill out of Wantage)
https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-driven/alpine-...

Anyway, if i've interpreted the above correctly then this is the route which I took the time to explore yesterday. Pretty good! The zigzags are fun, but the road immediately afterwards along the hilltop is spectacular, such lovely views! If anyone is interested this is the route. And if you use it and see a tatty silver e36 with a roll cage and a driver with a silly grin on his face- that'll be me.

This route starts quite near my house and as you say the scenery is indeed spectacular. Looks like you are in the southern end of New Road, a few miles from my West Moors house. There are good driving roads in Dorset, you just have to get away from Bournemouth! Another one is the A354 from Blandford out to Salisbury and back. No speed cameras and some good fast bends. I believe Performance Magazine used it some years ago for a test.

I also recommend heading west. Good roads between Stur Newton and Sherborne (wickedly twisty in parts) plus west of Dorchester down to Lyme Regis.

I will look out for your E36 and enjoy the driving!
