Soon to be potentially commuting back and forth to Hook from Titchfield / Park Gate, looking at this route Vs M27 and M3 as they frankly look horrific everyday I cross Segensworth J9 to head towards Portsmouth.

What's the A32 like generally? Got two job offers, Basingstoke or Hook at the mo.

I commute to Basingstoke from Junction 9 M27, if you leave before 6:30 then it's 40 minutes, if you leave it until 7:00 it can be double that.

I only take the A32 if Waze says the M3 is busy or if there is an incident.

What time would you be heading home. The M3 south of Winnal can be queued up if you get there after 17:00.

I used to be at Odiham (Hook) and whilst I rarely commuted in my 4 years the Parents live in Fareham so I would occasionally leave at 5 to go see them and then return in the morning.

For Hook it was always quicker on the A32 (for Basingstoke M3) the problem you have is the A32 has a lot of builders that use the route and lorries, then in the summer the national trust type driver and on a Wednesday night don’t drive the A32 unless you want to assist a motor biker in dying or watch them have a very good try at it!

So yes the A32 is quicker (and I still use it if heading to London sometimes to cut the M27/M3) but it is a stressful journey.

Also it can flood in bad weather near Alton and the diversion is massive!

I did Knowle Village near Fareham to Hook as a commute a few years ago for a couple of years. It was fine generally and much better than the M3/M27 option.

Is there anyone left in Hook to work for, all the companies seem to have moved out or are planning to? Shame is it was a convenient location

Haven’t worked in Hook for circa 17 years when NTL still existed.

Been offer at DXC and Hook and Fujitsu in Hook, rate better at DXC

I worked at NTL too in the mid 90s, I remember the tea trolley coming round at 10:30 with biscuits!

Best commute I ever had was from Whiteley to Reading. A32, A339, A33. about 70 miles and I could do it in just over an hour on my bike. It was all fast A roads back then and I didn’t care much for my license!

I took VR from HPE just before they changed to DXC in March last year. Don't miss the place, people were good but the company is terrible now. They were trying to get contractors to cut rates when I left. Whole place moving to Aldershot over the next 2 years from what I've heard.

Miss the commute, that was 50 miles each way, I'm now on 86 each way.. idea to get something closer to home didn't quite go to plan!

Been offered contract role at both. I worked for HP at Collingwood years ago, awful firm and i’d never work for them in a perm capacity

I used to commute two times a week from Portsmouth to both Basingstoke (Basing View) and Reading (Lower Early) via Hook.

The M27/M3 is/was a total nightmare and I avoided that most of the time - the only time I did use it, was when I could be arsed to get up early, leave Portsmouth at 6am to be in Basingstoke/Reading for 6:45am/7am.

Generally however my route to both was A3 - Selbourne - Alton before splitting off left to Basingtoke or right to Reading via Odium to Hook.

Of the two, I would choose Hook because Basingstoke always involved a queue regardless which way you approached it.

Meon Hut junction can get a bit shagged especially when there is a problem on M3 but love the route but then again I'm going the other way!

Fingers crossed!

Next thing is to get a 3rd car, looking at a 57 plate Seat Ibiza at the moment, as I'm not wanting to do 400 miles a week long term on my 135i. It'll be parked for weekends or sold.

I drive to A272/A32 daily. A nice drive and rarely a problem. Just have to have patience as it may be a 60mph road but usually you're doing 40 due to lorries and other slow moving vehicles and not many over taking points.

Makes sense. I went for the Hook role, so now for a cheap runaround.

I worked at Hook for 4 years for FJ and in total 14 years as a contractor to them in Bracknell, Aldershot and Basingstoke as well.

I generally only used the M3 as I tended to start early/finish early but used the A31 as backup (except for Aldershot as it was generally quicker off the M3 and across country).

Spent 6 months for HPE in Erskine, then emigrated to Australia shortly after, enough said! smile
