Hi all, i'm looking at heading down to the Camber Sands / Rye / Winchelsea Beach area. I fancy a walk around on either beach and a nose around Rye. Has anyone been down there recently, is it worth a visit?

I live aroud the Reigate area and have seen much of the south coast around Brighton, Worthing, Eastbourne etc and fancy seeing somewhere else for the day.

Is there any other nearby coastal areas people go to with a young family worth seeing?

Cheers.

Rye's worth a trip. Make sure you go up into the old town, there's a great old pub up there...oldest in England or something.

Hastings is ok, best in the winter though when it's quiet.

If anyone does go down that way, I cant say too much about the tourist stuff, but if you want a really ( and I do mean really ) good fun but challenging blast then do the following.

Head north out of Rye on the A268 towards peasmarsh. Just as you go over the railway bridge hang a right onto military road. Doesnt look like much at first but becomes an awesome fast road with lots of funny little dog legbends that, if its clear, you can straighten out to keep the pace up. Keep heading up this road until you get to Appledore, chuck a right onto the B2080, follow this down through Snargate and Brenzett the road then becomes the A259 as you pass Old Romney. Then follow the road until you get to a T junction with a turning on the right for Lydd, the B2075. Follow this road through Lydd, out the otherside towards Camber. Just stay on the main drag and it will take you all the way back to Rye.

They are some of the best driving roads in the area and are the sort that are good fun and a bit of a challenge even if you stay on the right side of 60mph. That loop will take you around 40 mins to an hour depending on if you come across a tractor and all I would say is that the both military road and the Jurys Gap road from Lydd to Rye are flat as a pancake with limited reference points and very deep drainage ditches on either side so dont baloon out of the bends.

Only other thing to be wary of are shiny saloon cars with four blokes in white shirts inside.....very popular roads with Sussex / Kent police driving schools.
