Looking for a low-ground clearance friendly restaurant near Malton - not IN Malton necessarily, and I know the speed bumps there are too high for my car. Intimate would be good...

The Star at Harome about 12 miles NW of Malton has a good reputation and is very intimate. It's expensive by local standards but that is reflected by the setting (ie. quaint thatched cottage, quiet village with ducks and prestigious cars outside.
They had early closing on Sundays a while back, best check beforehand.

Have a good time.

Thanks - they seem terribly popular, according to the reservations sheet, so they must be good.

Any other suggestions please?

For excellent food go to the Apple Tree Inn at Marton. Its a little Olde Worlde pub style inside, but the food is truly excellent, as is the service. Not cheap but absolutely worth it. Its on some fab back roads too! (Malton to Helmsley Road, turn right at Amotherby and head to Kirbymoorside) Otherwise, there is the Stone Trough at Kirkham (just off the A64). Not been for a while and used to be really very good, with a nice setting too (right near the priory). Nothing to match either in Malton Im afraid, and no speed bumps at either places. My choice would be Apple Tree. Happy eating!!

Just thought, the car park at the Stone Trough might be a little tricky, as its off the road and then quite steep uphill.

If you don't mind a bit of a drive, The Hare at Scawton is supposed to be very good. Again intimate but can get booked up quite a way in advance. It's not far from Helmsley on the right of the Sutton Bank road down a lane. www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&GridE=-1.1594&GridN=54.2429&lon=-1.1594&lat=54.2429&db=freegaz&lang=&addr1=&client=public&addr2=&advanced=&addr3=&pc=&quicksearch=scawton&scale=100000&cidr_client=none&place=Scawton,North+Yorkshire

Also The Fauconberg Arms at Coxwold has had a great reputation for donkey's years. Lovely little village too.
