I've been looking for a local place to take my two sons for skid pan training and I came across Tockwith driver training, Tockwith Airfield, York. They do kart, rally, performance and skid training.

Has anyone used them or know of them?

Tied to arrange the karting thier last year to entertain a few clients, as they do the twin engined karts.

However, when I phoned up they said there were none available all year.

Oliver (old WYTVCCC RO) arranged a brilliant TVR day there a couple of years ago.

They also have/had dual control Fiestas, so your son can learn to drive (think there are age/height restrictions).

Ar not understandie, my sons both drive already. I just wanted to enhance their driving knowledge to help them survive out there on our icy roads.

I went there as part of my RideDrive day. The skid pan is a small doughnut shaped affair so you experience skidding under drive rather than under braking. I got bored after a little while because you are skidding at 3mph - it was the transition between grip and slip that interested me.

Don't even think about using your own car on the skid pan though, it's filthy.

There is also a slab of runway I've looked into renting before but you've got to be moving a bit to slide much on there.

Hmm booked rally day there for wife a couple of years back, they cancelled the day twice the night before and then refused point blank to pay any refund

Agreed 100%. Its a very small ring covered in oil. They supply old bangers and overalls to do it in. You skid doing no speed at all which is interesting, but not like the big skid pans that the Polce use. I started to feel dizzy because the circuit is so small - and had to start going the other way round it to stop myself from feeling ill !

The rest of the place is OK rather than brill - but the runway would benefit from a visit from a roadsweeper to get rid of the lots of stones.

I've been on the skid pan and I can echo the previous comments. Its ok, but very small and you can't get any speed up.
I've heard from someone in the know, who alleges that the kart maintainence is poor.

I think I'll give them a miss. I'm sure there's some else out there who can provide better facilities.

f you contact Durham Police at Akley Heads they have a great skid pan

I took a dozen TVRCC members there for free some years back and we had a superb time

Broadslides. j turns etc

They put it into their Public Relations budget

Just have to speak the right language
