Food is actually decent in Scarbs, a friend of mine owns Cowshed Burgers if you're a burger fan which are exceptional. Also my best mate is the chef at The Grapes out Ebberston way and that is also superb.

I'd live on the outskirts if I went back, maybe Malton.
I've walked past Cowshed but I've yet to try it, thanks for the heads up though! I'll check out the Grapes too!
Let me know what you think and I'll pass on your feedback, and tell them I sent you smile

If referring to Scarborough, the split is generally considered from the castle.

Have a look around Thornton le Dale, Ebberston, Pickering, West Ayton....plenty of Bungalows, shops, pubs etc, but only ten/fifteen minutes from the coast.

Living on the coast is OK, but you can soon get bored looking at the sea. (Used to live in Bournemouth many years ago).

I have lived in Scarborough for nearly 10 years now - I would recommend the town to anyone and any age, I was born and bred in Rochdale and Scarborough is by far a nicer place to live your life! The "bad" areas of the town cannot be compared with the "bad" areas in Rochdale or other large town/city so its all relative from what you are used to! As a location to retire to it has it all, cheap housing, lots of outdoor pursuits - minutes from Dalby forest / North York moors / Excellent coastline / Yorkshire Wolds. In the summer months there is always something going on and the open air theatre gets some big names these days. The spa get lots of names also, Jimmy Carr, Russell Watson etc

The local council have just given the go ahead for a multiplex cinema and a multi million pound water park has just opened so the town is on thee up in my opinion.

The "bad" areas are Barrowcliff Estate, Eastfield Estate and North Marine road area / central town. I would let any of my children walk through these areas by themselves to put into context how "bad" they are. I actually lived in Eastfield for 5 years and had no trouble what so ever - and that was with a 911 parked on the drive. Insurance premiums are some of the lowest in the country Im in my 30's and paid £150 10yrs NCB for a V8 Range Rover! My previous 911 and s2000 were both under £250 to insure also. So if you are in to your cars its a very forgiving postcode! (YO11, YO12 & YO13)

The better areas of Scarborough are - Scalby, Burniston, Sandybed, Ayton, Irton, Cayton, Osgodby, Seamer, Crossgates, Lebberston, Filey Road.

I now live in Cayton - a quiet village with mainly retired folk!

If you have any questions about anything let me know OP.

I lived in Malton for 15 years, and loved it.
However its changed a lot, they are building so many houses but not improving the road network, schools and gp surgerys.
As we both work in Scarborough we decided to move there, up near the hospital.
I have to say I am a lot happier. As said above there are some areas to avoid, and traffic can be bad, but you learn how to avoid this.
There is more to do, more choice, its close to Filey and Whitby too.

Hello. Old thread, but I am moving to Scarborough next spring when I've sold my apartment in Lagos, southwest Portugal. I am originally from Skipton and had considered going back there, but it is too small, as is Lagos. I know Scarborough from an age ago. Anyway, I've decided on the Esplanade area and west and slightly south of it.

Did the person who started this thread find living in Scarborough a pleasant experience?

I used to live just off the Esplanade, was quite a nice area when I was there. Nightmare for parking in summer though!

I’ve been up here now since 2016, although now live in East Ayton. My folks have relocated up here too from South Oxfordshire. It’s a different, slower pace of life up here, in a good way.
Town, and the Esplanade can be a pain in the arse for parking etc as mentioned.

Have you actually bought somewhere and/or been back to Scarborough anytime recently? The place is a dump these days and you’d be far better off in/around Skipton or many other places IMO.

To counter, we moved here a year ago just near Oliver’s mount and are loving it.

Neighbours have been here a few decades and say how it’s changed but seem happy.

We have a 9 and 6 year old and weekends we are spoiled for choice, whether we stay put or head north / south / west for activities etc.

People generally seem to be friendly and it’s easy to strike up conversations with residents and visitors, vast majority have great affection for the town.

Some of the issues that affect Scarborough affect any similar size town in the U.K. (100k inhabitants), but there are well over 2M visitors per year for day trips and holidays which adds to the strain (but also contributes to the economy while offering unique challenges such as traffic and summer infrastructure).

So the high street for example, while generally buoyant, is working out how to adapt to the same challenges faced by all high streets.

The council seems to have made some interesting decisions around investment (Alpamere Water Park…) but the outdoor theatre pulls in some global level acts.

Food choice is really good for independents and more are springing up every week.

Driving roads round her are generally single track but if you head North towards Whitby and the moors, there’s some great driving roads and you can find space to explore.

A lot will depend on what / where you have come from. I was originally aiming to live a little out of town but being ten minutes walk away in a leafy suburb is a great compromise to being in town with access to everything.

Every time I walk to the end of our street I still take photos like the tourist I was that first visited Scarborough decades ago, so maybe I’m biased regards my adopted town!
