Yes, you definitely pay a premium for the station/ease of commute and for the Ilkley postcode. Not my bag to be fair, my ex is from there and its too cliquey for me.

Addingham I love and would make a lot more sense if there is no requirement to head into town regularly.
Indeed, I was born in the Ilkley and worked there for while and spent an awful lot of Saturday nights in the restaurants, there is as you say an "Ilkley set" but that never bothered me as the place is more than large enough not be involved or indeed feel like you're not involved.

I'd love to move back but the market has risen well above my pay grade.

All good shouts so far, don't forget to look at Middlestown. Flockton, Emley, Cawthorne Denby Dale and surrounding areas.....all still within an hour of Leeds and some lovely locations.

Look at the Wharfedale railway line for options.

Leeds > Guiseley > Menston > Burley in Wharfedale > Ben Rhydding > Ilkley

Each has qualities.

Menston and Burley are nice, self contained villages. Each stop towards Ilkley adds 10-20k for the identical house, if not more once you reach Ilkley. Ben Rhydding is nice but on a hill and few shops. All have serious land constraints for development. You may be surprised how little 500-600k gets you, depending on your aspirations for space.

The train service is excellent.
Ilkley is very nice, like a mini Harrogate.
Schools, etc are good
Very good walking and sports
Very good range of food - excellent butchers and independents / farmers markets.

I'll PM you as well - I helped someone move from London last year and have an extensive list of local services, etc.

I'd put Skipton on your list too. Nice market town, plenty of shops, pubs, restaurants and on the edge of the Dales. Good train link, and easy to drive to Manchester and Manchester Airport. It's a bit easier going than Ilkley and Harrogate and you might get more for your money too.
This is very true. Skipton is more "down to earth". Some lovely Victorian houses.

Access to Leeds, or to any of the cities can be a case of being close to one of the motorways.
We're in North Yorks but only 45 mins from the centre of Newcastle by dint of the fact we're 5 minutes from the A1, so if you wanted more choice and better VFM (and arguably nicer villages) you could look further afield (Ripon & Thirsk areas) if you looked along the A1 corridor.

Despite being 5 mins from the A1, we're in a dip and don't hear the traffic at all. The same applies to the village I grew up in (Kirklington) which is well within an hour of Leeds yet has a Bedale postcode.

What about Ripon or if a bit more rural but with good restaurants, Masham - both within an hour or so of Leeds but well served for local ameneties.

BD3 and BD8 (Manningham, Thornton Rd) are two of the areas you see a lot on TV. Mostly cop shows where they are chasing drug dealers or scrotes in their uninsured A3, carrying their cousin's driving licence and pretending not to understand the coppers. Lovely place.

Outside the busy hours, it is only 40 minutes steady drive from here in Wakefield to York, and Whitby is 90 minutes away. So an hour from Leeds is a huge area!

That lovely culture is spreading out as well and now goes well beyond the traditional ghettos of central Bradford.

Collingham and Wetherby are good shouts, the school in Wetherby is not brilliant, so something to bear in mind if you have sprogs. Menston and the Wharfe Valley are really nice, good schools but the traffic is bloody awful and I wouldn't move back. Skipton is a damn good shout, but I would look for a nice village near Wetherby. Spofforth and Sicklinghall are nice.

Thanks again.

No kids, just the two of us and then a couple of dogs when settled.

It isn't the best... but then the train line is so reliable if you are heading for central Leeds then it's much cheaper, faster and easier by train. I would agree that other destinations around Leeds are bad in rush hour.

The area around Ripponden/Barkisland/Stainland/Norland etc between Halifax and the M62 is worth a look. £600k will get you an awful lot of house and probably some stunning views around there. You've got the transport links with the Calder Valley line and M62 a stones throw away and Sowerby Bridge has some really good places to eat and drink these days, as does Ripponden. Loads of rural pubs etc too.

Be careful around Hebden Bridge, Tadcaster, York and Pickering........lovely, but prone to flooding in the lower parts.

I'm from Lancashire, but my heart lies in North Yorkshire....god's own country.

Have a look at Aberford, some nice houses there and 15 mins away from Leeds.

Darrington could be worth a shout too, although a little further away from Leeds.

Just a quick update.

We spent last week travelling around the county. There are loads of wonderful places but we developed a very quick affinity with Skipton and Ilkley and the surrounding villages.

Will be spending more time up there before we sell to be even clearer but that area feels good to us.

Thanks for all the suggestions thumbup

Worth having a nose at Addingham too if you are happy to drive to a station (Ilkley).

I spent Sunday in Ilkley too, great place smile (although Piccolinos is cliquey as fook).
