I live in Riccall, can’t fault it but I grew up here as well. 2 pubs, shop, restaurant, takeaway, post office, nature reserve 1 mile away if you like walking. Selby is handy for minor things with York 20 min drive. Traffic is heavy on A19 at rush hour I just go back way with added bonus of decent driving roads if you have a nice car.

Also lived in Burnholme and Osbalswick.

£650k I would be looking Escrick/Bishopthorpe/Copmanthorpe/Acaster Malbis.
Cheers Russkie,

Hoping by to spend a lot less than £650k - something starting with a 5 would be much better.

Little update.

So we've found a lovely barn conversion over in Melbourne that's way under our budget but fits our needs perfectly. The obvious issue is that it's a 30 minute drive into York but the upside is that Pocklington has everything we'd ever need on a regular basis and that's just 5 miles away.

We've done a far bit of research driving around the area and are going to go to the local pub on Saturday night to see what it's like in the evening. It seems a great place for us but am keen to know if anyone has any views on the area?

Cheers, Gary.

We spent the day in Pock smile and were impressed with what it offers. We discovered the gliding club as one came in over the car as it landed!

Luckily we don’t have a work commute to do so trips to York will be infrequent and certainly not time dependent.

Thanks!

Cheers carlove, that’s really appreciated!

We’re doing a second viewing today and hopefully putting in an offer this week.

If you're settling on Melbourne then I do hope it works out - lovely spot. If you haven't had a look already the Pocklington canal is accessible at lots of places makes for an interesting walk in either direction winter or summer. Easy access behind the pub (handy). Dog heaven.
If you go to Hagg Bridge & walk towards the Derwent there are swathes of primroses under the hedges just past Storwood - worth a visit.
Offer accepted and with a following wind will be in about 6-8 weeks from now.

We walked the canal last weekend and loved it!

Thanks for the tip inn Hagg bridge, sounds lovely.

Thanks again!

Funnily enough, I was having a haircut on Monday in York and the barber told me about the raceway and I went for a look. The next rally is on 6th April I think.

I agree with a lack of properties - we were lucky that the place we’re buying is a newly converted semi detached barn and it was sold three times but the chain collapsed behind the buyer so it was still available when we discovered it!

Many thanks Viperzs.

Thanks to you all for taking the time to provide really useful information and for the posts of encouragement. Its always a bit of a gamble moving to a new area but we feel it’s the right move for us and your posts have helped enormously.

Had to pull out of the purchase today. Too many potential issues with other possible buildings going up around the property.

Back to the drawing board!

Being brutally honest I think that is not a bad result. Location is everything in and around York. Buying that place would be fine but if you wanted to sell you would be looking for a buyer who was happy to make the same compromises on location.

There is so much stuff on at the moment just wait for the right thing to come up, I think most prices are negotiable at the moment, although the problem with York is the best stuff is always in demand and there is generally a queue of buyers waiting (and renting).

Good luck with your new search.

Exactly my thoughts too - I'm happy to make a compromise or two BUT when it gets to a few and they have potential for impacting your own future sale/value, you have to say enough is enough!

Cheers, we're both a little bummed but know it's the right decision.

A nice house has come on today in Shipton for £550k. Bit of land, semi rural. Worth a look imo.

Interestingly I was talking to someone in Allerthorpe yesterday who was fighting the erection of 200 holiday type homes. Allerthorpe itself only has 63 dwellings!
There’s actually an application for 17 in Melbourne on the site of a paddock. Locals are fighting that at present.

Just viewed this today. It seems like a great location and the house is fine as is but gives us scope to change it internally to suit our needs.

Can anyone comment on the house and location?

Thanks
Gary

Nice spot. Just be wary of proximity to the river.
It was the first question I asked smile. The EA has stated that the property has never flooded but it is close to the Environmental Agency flood zone 2 so will call the insurance broker I use to get a quote before I go any further.

What a fantastic house! Bishopthorpe is a lovely village, nice pub and amenities. Close enough to York for nights out etc but maintains village feel.
Thanks - that's always nice to hear.

We just need to work out how much to offer. The agent is adamant that with others looking so quickly (went on market on Tuesday and already had viewings yesterday and us today with more later) it will probably go for asking price or possibly over. So do I just accept that it's the perfect house for us and go in at asking price or take a chance on an offer?

Decisions, decisions.

Yes its a decent spot in bish. Nearly everywhere in york is a flood risk, just see what your insurance says as yo7 are do8ng.

Its a bungalow so will go quickly as the area is nice and flat and good for bus routes and local shops. Popular with oldies.

You have no chain so you might get in with an offer if nobody else can move quickly. Depends on who else is in the game.

Apparently two others who are proceed-able and one with a house to sell. Was thinking starting at £460,000 but it's really difficult to gauge this one.

Depends how badly you want it. I’m sure I’ve seen these sorts of bungalows selling for £100k less than that and lower, maybe I’m wrong.

This one sold for £407,000 in October 2016.
