The tiny island left of centre is Longay, with Scalpay behind it and Skye behind that. The mountains forming the jagged skyline right of centre are the Black Cuillin of Skye.
Lovely pic. Great to get the air so clear.

Since hearing about the NC500 last week, my wife has suggested we make a visit mid January, as we’ve got a week off booked and no plans. We’d be doing it on a fairly tight budget.

So far I’m struggling to find places to stay, as it seems that much of the accommodation closes over the winter months. We’ve looked at hiring a camper van as an option, but that raises other issues, such as navigating small roads.

Is it feasible at that time of year? We’ll also have 2 small kids in tow, but they’re used to long car journeys.

Yes... almost all hotels close Nov to March. However roads are completely empty in Jan, so you can motorcaravan till your hearts content and will (on the west coast) see almost no traffic. Roads near the sea on the west hardly ever get to 0C. There are some bars in hotels that stay open. PM me if you need more info.

Of course, Holiday lets and B&Bs are mostly open. Here are a bunch round here: http://www.stevecarter.com/ansh/ansh7.htm

Obvious to say but in Jan you get 18 hours dark here, so need playing cards or DVDs!

But when it's good Jan is stunning here:

Myself and the wife ended up staying a couple of nights at the Applecross Inn last January. Perfectly peaceful without the hordes for exploring during the day and sitting by the fire with a book in the (long) evenings. I loved it, she hated it.....

I'm heading back to Scotland today and will be doing parts of the NC500 next week, can't wait!

Hi, we are going to be doing the NC500 in early November hopefully. We will be in a VW camper but i am struggling to find places that are open to park up for the night. My wife has a requirement of toilets! haha. Does anyone have any ideas for the west / north coasts?

Thanks in advance. Andy

Public toilets in Shieldaig, Torridon and Kylesku.

Thousands of places to park.

Shieldaig bar open all year, Torridon Inn & Kylesku Hotel open till mid Nov (check exact dates... both do good food)

PM me nearer for more details if you need to.

Kylesku bogs!

I remember Sango Sands campsite used to be open year around, but now they seem to charge for those crazy enough to camp over winter...

https://sangosands.com/camping-prices-for-tents-an...

They are open, but say you have to go to the toilets just around the corner.

Anyway, they come recommended!

There'll be hotels open in Ullapool, maybe Lochinver (Culag), Tongue (Ben Loyal), Thurso, Wick and no doubt several down the east coast. Dornoch, Tain etc

I just watched this French bloke park like this and his passenger scrape between the Fiat and the 911. All the room in the world. Don't you just love 'em.

I was over west last week for work related trip to Ardnamurchan, most westerly mainland Scotland, blimey it takes forever to get there but fantastic views across to Mull, Eigg and Rum.
This isn't part of the NC 500 but if you have a small/medium sized sports car the roads are great fun. Went to the recently rescued Mingarry Castle which was very nice and great food, the new Adelphi Distillery was good too.

I took the GT of course which didn't suit the roads on the peninsula but was great for the rest of the trip and did manage to get over the Carron Ferry

Hoping Steve (GetCarter) can answer this one, Is it better to do the clockwise or anticlockwise loop around Applecross, does one way or the other favour the views? we're heading up that way at the start of November for a couple of days instead of our usual trip to Skye. Thanks.

Views are better clockwise IMO. Especially as you approach Torridon.

I'll second that.

Been on 'holiday' for a few days around Loch Tay... limited scope for a decent run out but managed to get a run up Glencoe with lunch at the Clachaig then looped back round via Oban. Nice run despite the weather and a few dawdlers but roads were very quiet and it cleared up later.

Has fueled the need to get away up north for a few days, ideally a child friendly hotel with some pampering / spa facilities on site (or nearby) to keep her ladyship relaxed. Had looked at Mull (just to tick it off the list) but seems a bit limited so any ex NC500 runners able to recommend any such places up the West coast?

Ideally a couple of locations over a couple of days so we can make our way along at a more sedate pace, more so the infant in tow gets a bit fed up after a few hours in the car... as does the missus.

Would like to get a run in before the end of the year but equally, would like to treat her to some down time but also need to think of the wee man.

Been Googling all morning and struggling a bit to find places that may fit the bill... the bill not been a blank cheque affair I hasten to add!

Regards

I don’t think there are any hotels on the north west coast that do spa/pampering. The Torridon Inn (or hotel if you are flush) does loads of activities kids would like (not sure what age you have), and the atmosphere is seriously relaxed ... but no spa for many miles!
