Now that the Carrera 997 Gen2 has been around some time, have any problems arisen as with the Gen1 engines? Or are they as bulletproof as first thought.

They are better, but not bullet proof. Pop over to 911uk forum where Baz from Hartech has outlined his research into issues; one of the regular posters has had to have a full rebuild, and Demort (the resident Porsche tech) has shown pictures of serious coking up.

Is that down to DFI? A friend with an Audi RS4 had similar probs.

Engine problems are rare, way more so than with the Gen 1, although there are a few documented examples.

Main issue for me was degeneration of suspension components, heat shields, brackets, basically anything that can rust is now needing replacement, depending on how much use the car has had in wet weather.

One of my 997's went in for a service and the lovely OPC handed me a 'health check' quote for nearly £3k's worth of replacement parts due to corrosion.

I declined their kind offer.....had it inspected at an Indy and they advised it was probably 3 years off needing anything replacing as it was nowhere near as bad as the OPC had suggested.

Mine was a late 2011 car, 32k miles, the inspection was in May 2018 and under OPC Warranty to give you an idea on timescale. None of it was deemed to be included under the warranty...

A friend had exactly the same experience, but corrosion was worse, same age car with similar milage, had the works carried out at GCR for 1/3 of the cost OPC quoted.

Cheers for that info. I have a 3.6 gen1 (2007) 52K & am a bit wary about pouring money into the car, although she runs like a dream... no tapping noises etc. I first bought the car almost 5 years ago and at the time thought it would be a ‘keeper’ as I’m over 60 now and looking towards retirement so less income... but there’s always in the back of my mind the possibility of the ‘Hartech’ £12000 rebuild. So not sure whether to sell & spend another £20K on top & get a gen2 or stick with my car & hope it doesn’t come to a rebuild. My car gets serviced every 3000 miles ... so well cared for smile and anything needs doing it gets sorted rather than let the jobs start stacking up.

I have a 2009, 3.6 C2 with 100k on the clock, I do an annual oil change and apart from the front suspension rust issues, the top mounts rust, and I had the whole front end renewed! Apart from that it has been faultless.

At the moment, I'd say if you know your current car well & it has no issues, I'd stick.

I sold my 997.2 in May (38k miles, PASM, PSE high spec), got just over £35k for it trade with OPC. Similar cars up for sale now £35-£37k at dealers so trade bids must be around low £30k's.

You'll take a bit of a hit selling your current car plus lose the dealer margin on the next car if buying through a dealer. The change may not be massively different to a rebuild on your current car.

Plus, you could still get problems a year or so down the line with a Gen 2 car (as mentioned above).
