I believe theres currently no ability to add a custom config.json so its GUI only.

Best to ask on the UI forums.

Reminds me of Apple's old Airports...

Depends what you really need/want it for.

I have a load of Unifi gear at home. I like it... But it's very expensive for what it is and I do get the impression Ubiquiti are following Apple's trend of dabbling with the fancy looking trinkets whilst losing track of the core product.

E.g. ZHO was a farce and I'm still not convinced they are ahead of the game in getting their APs to cooperate to best effect. Am not convinced they're even IN the game.

Think requirements and have a wider look at the market would be my advice.

I'd suggest you get the separate products as it gives more scope and better future proofing. You can also neatly rack items and have the AP's where you like.

I'd suggest:

Unifi USG
Unifi AC Lite
Unifi 8 Port POE switch
Unifi Cloud Key Gen2 (Can just run controller on laptop or VM if you like)

Yes it's expensive for home setup but far cheaper than the big players for enterprise level control and config. You would still need a modem to connect to open reach fibre network. Either pick up a 2nd hand open reach modem on ebay or buy a Vigor 130.

No room to stick a 19" rack and cant run structured cabling unfortunately so any ap's would need to be wireless uplinked mesh

I'd search on here and Google generally for the best mesh deployed WiFi. This is not, IME, Ubiquiti's strongest suit. If you had cabled outlets then the above suggestion would be good.

If you then need wired outlets somewhere, get an unmanaged switch near to an AP and go from there.

USG and Cloud Key are superfluous IMO. At least until you have the rest sorted... And if you go non-Ubiquiti for that then they remain so.
