Apologies, it is a beam. Is a glulam a beam made from several pieces of wood? Have not used one alike that shown in Steve's picture. Looks good

Yes, strips of laminated timber glued together to form a light and strong beam. Also has the added advantage of being quite stylish. Website if your interested www.glulam.co.uk/about.htm

Glad to see the progress on the house, I hadn't looked at the blog for a while, just one criticism - not enough photos of Charlie

I'm IN!

No broadband yet mind (BT are not that bright).

Anyway... a few pics of the finished wee hoose (sans furniture) here: www.stevecarter.com/build/build15.htm

I'm off to start unpacking.

The end result looks totally stunning. I think the amount of hassle you have had has put me off any idea of self build though - especially in the north west Highlands, although the views might make it just about worth the trouble nuts You couldn't hope for a much better place to relax now its built though!

What a great read. I've just sat and read this through in a "wunner". You really should consider fleshing this out and putting it into print; you're a natural. thumbup

Thanks for the read Steve - where on earth did you get the time and/or energy to write it up on a website fgs?!

Very useful to me as a complete construction numpty looking at grasping the nettle and doing a few of this sort of thing myself, a great insight.

Enjoy!

Excellent blog - very inspirational. I hope it's all worthwhile over the coming years - it's certainly a beautiful part of the country you've chosen to live in. (Please stop showing all those pictures, or everyone will want to emigrate & fill the roads full of numpties )

Amazing house in an amazing part of Scotland!

Your blog was a great read too.

My brother built a house in Skye a few years ago so I can sympathise about the problems associated with self builds on the West Coast!
