The newly released V-Power from Shell to replace Optimax is now 99Ron also, and is widely available up here. Ok, it's probably 5p/litre more expensive than the tesco stuff, but a review I read in another magainze showed that Optimax gave better results than tesco 99RON when running on turbo cars.
For cars which don't have active knock control, and you can't remap the ECU, then there would be litle benefit in running the more expensive fuel (for power), as the engine won't be able to advance the timing etc to make the best of it.

That's bizarre! I was along a couple of weeks back and i'm sure they didn't have 99! Has it just come in?

Scientific test my arse.
True science would dictate an engine connected to a dyno in a dyno cell where atmospheric conditions can be homogenised across the tests. It would also seek to vary more than one characteristic, e.g. not just whats the power out put when you bung in this fuel, but how much extra advance can you run on the ignition.
Thats what Jap Perf. did with Optimax, Ultimate and Tesco99. Optimax won by some 20 odd hp and 40lb ft.

Tesco have been very keen to roll out this grade in Scotland and to that end we are investing in some tank alterations at Ross Chemical
(Grangemouth) which will enable us to supply from there. The fuel should be available from early November, I hope it may be sooner as I am pushing the engineering work hard.

Ah I'm going on second hand info here, since I'm currently in Moscow. My son says he tried it in his Spitfire a few weeks ago. I will re check with him and come back.

VetteG, I'd check with your engine builder before splashing out cash on expensive fuels. If it has been built to run with 95 RON fuel and doesn't see any knocking then it is unlikely you will see any benefit from the more expensive fuel. Even if you adjust the timing to compensate you'll be unlikely to see any great improvements. It's only if you adjust the static CR and cam timing that you would get any benefit.
My SBC was built in the US for 91 AKI gas and runs great on UK 95 RON unleaded. Japanese turbo cars which were designed for 100 RON petrol will definitely benefit from the newer fuels though.
Personally I'm holding out for better availability of E85 bioethanol. Would be quite interesting to build a modern LSx V8 to make full use of the improved burn characteristics. In an Ultima it would quite a bit quicker than that Exige that was in the news recently too...

My engine does not run well on 95ron, so I have been using Optimax. However Optimax is made for modern engines and my small block chevy is a 1960, 1970's engine hence my thinking it will run better on the (cheaper than Optimax) less complex 99ron Tesco stuff. Engine builder is American and USA petrol is graded in a different way to ours, however they do recommend 'Super' gas.
