I'm the bloke you put the YouTube vid together, and I also help organise the Catterline Carties, so it's great to hear that I've inspired you into thinking about running a cartie race at Fintray. There are a few more vids at www.youtube.com/profile?user=catterlineCarties .
You might be interested to know that there were three cartie races in Aberdeenshire this year. As well as at Catterline ( http://catterline.org/carties ), there was one in Stonehaven and one up at Monymusk ( www.monymusk.org/ ). A couple of teams entered all three (and "Once a fortnight is plenty" won all of them), so it seem we may have the beginnings of a small "circuit" on our hands.
I'm really interested in the idea of a cartie race at Fintray. I'd wondered about it a few times last year, but lacked any contacts and wasn't sure how well the idea would be received. If you're thinking of running one, it might fit in really well with the other three as part of a "Grampian Cartie Grand Prix". There are about 2 dozen race proven carties in the area, so you'd be guaranteed a good field. What do you think?
BTW : For those of you thinking of entering at Catterline - it's first come first served and those who took place last year will get early notice. The best way to find out when we start accepting entries is to register with our mailing list. Details are at http://catterline.org/carties . I think it is a great idea, but you would need to contact the Grampian Automobile Club who organise the Fintray hillclimb events. I would suggest contacting George Ritchie via the GAC website www.gac.org.uk.

Thanks for that. I'll follow it up and see where it leads. BTW - just fixed the links in my previous post, so they work properly now insted of giving a "page not found". Doh!
Oh - and the bad news is... experience suggests that ballast is a bad thing. Gravity acts equally on all objects (cannon ball v. marble - both hit the ground at the same time), but more mass == more rolling resistance == slower acceleration. Light carties, skinny tires, super slick bearings and tiny drivers is the way to go.
