Ah, the joys of dog ownership mean that we'll be taking our holiday in Scotland this year.

Next month, we're off to Aviemore for a week. I've taken a cracking lodge, quite remote but a reasonable distance from civilisation.

It's been a few years since I've spent any time in the area so wondered if anyone has any ideas about things to do / places to eat and drink.

The only thing on my list at the moment is to see the ospreys (if they're still around at this time of year).

Cheers,

Eric smile

We were up there for a short break a Month ago, Venicular railway was really good as was the view from the top. We had to race from Aviemore (had only 10mins) to make the last train up & it was like a bit of "the ring" followed by a Hillclimb to make it (just) !
landmark is fun but u would prob need kids in tow to fully enjoy it. Swimming at the Hilton Coylumbridge hotel was also fun (well it was fun up to the point our 4 year old slammed into a Grannys head - well there was a sign saying don't stand at the btm of the water slide... !) Didn't go to the McDonald one but heard they have a good pool as well.

Really enjoyed our break, very nice scenery esp round loch Morlich - look out for the funny tree on the way.

Hope this helps a little & enjoy your trip smile

Ski. Pack a dozen plus folks into a room at the Freedom Inn, or 20 folks into a caravan. Party. Beers in the Wanky (the Winking Owl). Sneak in to the residents only sauna in the Strathspeay Hotel through the kitchen door. Get thrown out of the curling by seeing if you could knock the old codgers over skittles-style with curling stones. Party some more. Offer the lassies sweeties from your [cut away] pockets...and a fair few fell for it. Nekkedness. Ski some more with monster hangover & throw-up between timed runs. Push the folk singer off stage in the Red Magreggor and take over with renditions of 'adult' material; get hauled off by the cops. Try to pull in Cynthias Disco...night after night (there was a fair 'turnover' of material). Decide the DJ's afro isn't real; nick DJs wig and find he's a baldy. Get thrown out...again. Tell the old dear in the swimming pool that your names are Robert Sole, Alan Niss and his brother Peter; she'd always read out your initial and surname when giving your locker deposit back and never 'got it'. Get further pi$$ed in the Red McGreggor and then try to swim in the 'fountains'. Ski some more. Drink Benylin chasers. Throw up some more. Party some more. More nekkedness.

Aviemore; well that's how I'll always remember it - venue for some of the greatest times ever. And the venerial disease capital of the UK for most of the late 70s. Except, that was 30 years ago and it's mostly all gone now I gather...and so has the snow frown Fond, fond memories. And probably no help whatsoever... But it made me smile writing it and remembering the great times of me yoof.

We stayed at Newtonmore (just a few miles down the road) for a week last year. Had a great time in a nice cottage: (http://www.balvatincottages.com/, SIDC discount available if you ask nicely smile) There's a links page on the website as well with things to do etc.

Landmark - didn't rate it, nor did our kids. Wouldn't go there if you don't have kids.

Highland Wildlife Park - really liked this as did our kids. You drive around in your own car and get close up to bison, deer and various other things, plus you can park up and walk around to see some of the other animals. Arrive first thing in the morning when it opens, and you can follow the rangers around as all the animals get fed.

Railway up the mountains - don't bother unless it's a clear day, you won't see a thing. Quite a nice drive up there though!

Strathspey Railway - good way to spend an hour or two if you like old steam trains. The chairman of their society is an ex Enterprise Oil colleague and still drives the trains from time to time!

Plenty of good walks in the area, but hope the weather is good.

We didn't eat out a lot, but plenty of coffee shops which sell nice scones and things. We did eat in Roos Leap as part of the train station. Food was pretty bad and so was the service so we vowed never to go near it again.

Laggan Wolftrax mountain bike centre is not far - you can hire bikes and they have an entertaining downhill run with jumps and stuff - our kids loved it as did I. They will give you a lift to the top in a bus+trailer too. Part of the attaction is that it is Totally Dangerous. Guy I was talking to said they regularly have the ambulance there picking up folk with broken collar bones etc. Our family got away with minor flesh wounds and bruises only.
Plenty of nice places to walk dog nearby between runs. Also trails for hard core mountain bike types if you were that way inclined.

If you're looking for a good walk, head up from Glenmore lodge, past the Loch Uaine, and up to the Ryovan Bothy. Turn left there and follow the path up onto the top of Meall a' Bhuachaille. It's not a big hill but it gives fantastic views over Loch Morlich and up into the Cairngorms. Then come down the other side of the hill, heading about S or SW, back into the forrest.

Not a long /hard walk but a really good one.

Cheers,

FT.

Eric,

Me and the girlfriend will be there on the 12th til the 15th of Oct. Not sure when you are going but i'll be in the Cobra so if you see me, give me a shout.

Highly recommended dinner in the old bridge inn. Take the first right upon entering Aviemore then first left.

I'll be staying at the house in Dalfaber Country club

Cheers,

Matthew
