Cop Cars - Unmarked - What & Where, as much detail on cars!!
Discussion
Hmmm. I'd very much like to see the evidence that going with a premium brand saves money. Also the value in having a four wheel drive vehicle. They wouldn't be paying full price for a Vauxhall either.

I'd rather they were driving something half decent rather than whatever the latest Vectra is.
Why? They shouldn't be exceeding the capabilities of your average eurobox anyway... Spotted Sprinburn turn off from M8
Unmarked Black Ford Focus SF09 NRE with Kojack style roof light.
Had caught white van man
Rear strobes in back window, with blue lights located in reversing lights and front grill blue strobes
Since Scotlands new Chief Const located traffic cars into divisions local commanders are now using their resourses in officers and cars to be much more active on the highways.
As a high mileage driver using Scotlands Motorway network on a daily basis I have seen more unmarked cars being used since this Jan than in the past 10 years.
Reg and makes of some spotted since Jan
AUDI A4:-
SF 12 CEJ Silver
BMW 3 Estate
SF 61 AUY Silver
SF 59 HKC Black
BMW 5 Saloon
SF 59 HKV Dark Blue or dark green
Mitsubishi Shogun
SF09CNY Dark grey or Blue
I suspect the police are being more high profile in the run up to one national police force coming in April.
Which will have 200 cars and 600 officers in Scotland traffic police divison alone this might become the norm on our roads

On that basis that I'd wager the Audi/Beemer/Volvo Estate is much better built and more reliable than an Insignia or such like. Plus, taking the traffic department, considering they will quite often be driving at full whack, the more capable the car the better IMO!fast dave said:
Do our good friends in Traffic do speed traps on the old A77?
Has Uk longest Average speed cameras from Dundonald to Girvan operating over 28 miles Over dual carriage way and normal roads also has the occasional camera van especially south of Girvan on the way to Stranraer

I still think there's more than a enough cars available from non-prestige manufacturers more than capable of the job they'll be doing. They're not taking the things to Knockhill for goodness sake.

Based on warranty claims (which is the best data I can find on the subject, I invite you to find better though!), Vauxhalls are more reliable than any of those cars.

Been discussed to death elsewhere on this site.http://www.reliabilityindex.com/manufacturer

In summary, civilians are in charge of the budget and have to be as cost effective as possible.
Purchase cost, fuel consumption, maintenance and retained value are all taken into account as well as the vehicle being fit for purpose.
Whatever vehicle provides best value gets chosen, not because PC Traffic man fancies a BWW over a Ford.
Saying that, rumour had it that Strathclyde could have had BMW 3 series as general patrol vehicles for the same price as the ford Focus's. Who ever was in charge of the rubber stamp thought it would not portray the right image for the force

An Insignia may be more reliable than a 5 Series but I can guarantee the 5 handles much better.http://www.reliabilityindex.com/manufacturer

As you say it's been done to death elsewhere.
I understand resale and discounts, the requirements of driving hard on the road and I remain deeply cynical. Ultimately if the result of a carefully constructed budget is police in Evoques, 5 series and Audi estates, I have no faith in public sector competence with budgets.
That's before we get into what you list are subjective assessments and perceptions rather than data.
It's a load of bks. Get them back in a Panda and use the cash to get more real police solving crimes.

You ain't wrong - the tactics are getting incredibly sneaky as well.SF12CEJ has been regularly sat in the parking bays at the VOSA sation on the M74 just before you get into Dumfries & Galloway. It looks just like a parked up car, until you notice the white hat and the laser popping up across the roof. Further south, they often sit in the wide-load lay by with the drivers door open, kneeling on the hard shoulder in the gap between the open door and the car.
They also like to sit behind one of the VMS signs between Douglas & Abington - after a fast sweeping bend, car tucked in behind the armco & blending in with the concrete support pillar. No hi-vis clothing, shooting up the motorway with the laser. It's before the usual elevated police viewing point, and well before the Abington camera van, so you wouldn't expect it.

I've spotted them in all of those locations repeatedly over the past two months.
Since the start of the year, there appears to be a crackdown on speeding between Motherwell junction and D&G border. I've seen the unmarked silver A4 and silver 5 series all over that stretch. Last week I saw them both on opposite sides of the M74 dealing with seperate vehicles at the same time!
They've become very sneaky with their parking/positioning.
You have been warned!
