Aberdeen reminiscences (mostly shops)
Discussion
Your right, but that was a few years later. I used to work there part time on Saturdays as a student fixing tv's radios etc. They also had a shop at the top of Holburn Street and a branch in Stonehaven and Inverness for a while, but they were never very successful. The record department was as you came in the front doors from George Street and the guitars amps etc were at the back up the steps as you say. Do you remember the recording booth ?.
I noticed this coming up and thought it might be of interest to those who enjoyed this thread.

I was in getting my buttered rowies and Guardian the other morning as usual and I said to the lady in the baker's that I reckon there's been a baker's shop in that premises for well over 40 years. I'm sure I remember it opening as a baker shop when I was in junior school.
At the time, it was between James Dun's House (then museum, now hair salon) and Taylor's Arts.

Another one. The other day, after wrestling a moral dilemma, I submitted and went to a big chain supermarket. Lesser of two evils though - Sainsbury's at Berryden.
Anyway, there's a row of shops there including what I presume must be a kid's shoe shop. On their sign, they have the "Start Rite" logo.
I was with my mum and said that it reminded me of a shoe shop on Union Street which was a huge place with a mezzanine gallery running all the way round. I remember red carpets and polished brass bannisters and fittings.
My mum wondered if it was called "Allen's".
Does anyone remember?

The record shop in Marshall Street was called Telemech. It was run by Roy Forman a well known figure
in the local music scene of the late 60s - late 70's. He may be better known to some as Roy Rhodes. He recorded some C&W albums under this name and had a show on Northsound Radio. He used to play in various venues around Aberdeen and had a resident spot in The Old World Inn on Holburn Street.
He only started to play C&W after being regularly asked by old women on nights out "can ye play stand by yer man son?". He then got more bookings and Northsound asked him to take a spot with a C&W show.
As far as I can remember he couldn't stand C&W music!.

SMT garage was on the corner of Bon Accord Street and Langstane Place just off Union Street
My old man used to work there, can pick out the pillar his desk was beside whenever I'm in that pub downstairs from Slaters. As a boy I enjoyed driving up and down from the roof!Remember popping across there when I was 16. My 17th birthday in June and Dad's company car renewal in August. Straight to the Manta brochures and was really chuffed knowing he could get a Manta GTE Exclusive with his company car budget!!! Imagined myself passed my test at 17 and then using his Manta at weekends.
Dissapointed when he went for the Sierra 1.8 GL as it could fit numerous golf clubs in the back :-( However not many 17yr old kids got to drive a brand new Sierra in those days (with free petrol at weekends).
George
That's the one!! There was a guy called Keith who used to work there on Saturdays
Thanks
Thanks

Eric, was that not Duncan's Bakery? They also has the one further down beside Wordies that made the dough rings in the window on a machine - think they also had Duncan's travel next door.
