Looking at this weeks SOTW Alfa 164, it looks s though it was originally registered in Ayrshire. Who was the Alfa dealer down there at the time as I can’t remember

My old man bought a couple of cars from there. I still have the 740 turbo he bought from them. Even has the Linn volvo sticker on the back window!

Is the service department now a workshop for Glasgow Private Hire? I know the petrol station was a hand car wash for a while, but that seems to have closed as well.

Not read the full thread but the car dealer at the Lock 27 in Anniesland//Bearsden always had nice cars! A nice diablo was sat there for a while!

Edit, probably came around a lot later than the 60-70s!

Can’t recall if mentioned elsewhere in the thread, Blanes of Paisley was another name from the Datsun past too.............
Did they get swallowed up in the AFG rollercoaster?

Anybody remember Peat Road Motors and Archers? Both had the Lada franchise, Archers had Yugo & Proton also, and they all made a fortune in their heyday, when Glasgow went mad for a new car for the price of a round of drinks. There's a lot more chat about them on hiddenglasgow.com.

You are correct , Tomkins were the Vauxhall dealers but at Edinburgh Rd / across from Lightburn hospital . Watsons were never in Queenslie . Watsons had branches in Airdrie , Coatbridge , Bellshill , Cumbernauld and Glasgow

If this is the garage at Bearsden rd / Temple rd at the canal , it was a garage in the 60/ 70s and specialised in Skodas .Temple Sawmill was across the road but now houses .

If memory serves me right , PRM and Archers used to advertise the Lada for £2999 . Terrible cars, but you get what you pay for .

It was either Taylors of Anniesland or C & A Thomas, can't remember which, although I think Thomas had the Skoda franchise. The site was later occupied by a used dealer, Anniesland Motors, who often had some exotic stuff outside. Don't know if this story is true, but apparently a smartly-dressed chap rocked up one day and asked for a test drive in something really tasty. They stupidly let him take the car out unaccompanied..and never saw it again.

It was Taylors of Anniesland when I had the odd occasion to deal with them .At that time Skodas were not as popular as today and we rarely took any in for repair or servicing .If they were crazy enough to let someone drive off on a test drive alone , hell mend them for being so stupid . I have known of some salesmen getting caught out when stepping out to change over seats / drivers on test drive and they were left at roadside as car sped off into the distance .

It was true, but much more recent than I remember...thanks for that!

rs you're right, Colin & Austin Thomas's place was much further down Gt Western Rd near Clydebank, and it was a Volvo franchise.
