Evening all
I am by profession an electrician. I have been an electrician for many many years. During this time I have used crimps of many different types and sizes to joint and terminate cables, the largest so far being a 240mm c.s.a. cable terminated into a 400Amp three phase mains panel.
B.S. 7671:2008 The Requirements For Electrical Installations 17th Edition issued by the British Standards Institute in conjunction with the Institute of Engineering and Technology (commonly the electrical "regs" book) makes no mention of avoiding crimped terminations or that they are in any way inferior or sub-standard (see section 526 Electrical Terminations) in fact regulation 526.8.3 states that:
"Soldered (tinned) conductor ends on fine wire and very fine wire conductors are not permissible where at connection and junction points which are subject in service to a relative movement between the soldered and non-soldered part of the conductor" so soldered joints shouldn't be used in some cases where vibration, or movement may be an issue as the cable will over a period of time break. I'm aware the regs is for "mains" electrics and were talking automotive here but the principles are identical.
If British Standards allows me to crimp an and onto a 240mm cable for use in a 400 Amp panel I sure wont have any qualms about crimping an end on to a cable to connect my wiper motor !! All the major car manufacturers use crimped ends so why shouldn't we FFS ? As mentioned above my only caveat would be to use quality crimps of the correct size for the given cable and to use a quality crimping tool that will exert the correct pressure.
Also Mr. Stoppit I was wondering if you'd seen my comments regarding your idea for using the heated Rear window as a speed regulator for the blower motor ?? (Topic: Two Stage fan Switch - simple solution) I'd like to hear what you think...

Me ? I was just trying to help by giving out some decent info - I agree with Rockettvr by the way. I'm not trying to criticise anybody.

It's not about whether you crimp or solder, as long as you are aware of the drawbacks of each system. The main problem as I see it is that I've seen too many of the crimp connectors improperly crimped, and that leads to unreliable service, or worse, a serious failure (like a fire).

A proper job needs the proper tools. It's as simple as that. But it's your choice what you rebuild with, not mine.

Those earlier pics won't tell you whether the crimps were done properly - you can't tell by looking at a photo (IMHO).

Afternoon all
Mr Stoppit you have posted on here berating the op for his use of crimped terminations- it has been pointed out that crimped terminations are used and are deemed acceptable in many industries - your response is to direct us to another post where ..... You tell everyone how to splice into a loom using CRIMPED terminations ??? Seems contradictory to me or have I read it wrong ???

Can we draw a line under this please - ON ALL SIDES. Completely off topic and unrelated to the thread.

If you don't like the work done you are free to say so. Diverting the thread off topic to repeat the same stuff post after post is disrespectful.

Hi Stuart
I'm sorry but if I feel an injustice is being done I have to speak out. To say that the op has "a messed up wiring" and that crimped connectors are "obscene" I felt I had to put the record straight
Enough said I shall let it lie.

+1....It does for me spoil what is a fantastic thread....Good advice is always welcome but for it to cause upset is not good.

Maybe Mr P could make up some plug and play wiring looms for us....smile...Id do it but i'm an electrical dimwit...biggrin

I have no issue with people expressing their opinion. It is the multiple pages of the same comments being repeated back and forth that are the issue.

John is a great engineer and his threads offer a 'volume' of references that can potentially be a great resource. It is unfortunate that John has past the point of wishing to take on more apprentices. Lets not deter him from chronicling his skills.

I never had any intention of offending anyone here, I obviously have
What I have unsuccessfully attempted to do is enlighten people about best procedures when wiring a vehicle
It is now that I regret posting my opinions here
Unfortunately we don't live in a ideal world and we can't please everyone, I think I have already mentioned about the amazing engineering that has been put into this vehicle and I mean this, I have read parts of this build and viewed images of machine work that I never knew could be achieved
Engineer1949 Has nothing to prove to anyone, the jobs he has undertaken will seem impossible to most
Anything that I post is not for one moment attempting to make a genius look amateurish
Unfortunately I don't have a very good knack when it comes to giving my opinion
None of you can imagine how many virtual bruises I have received from PH Posters
I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for being the culprit that has sent this topic off-topic
I congratulate Engineer1949 for such an amazing feat of engineering
My apologies go out to all those that I have unintentionaly offended
I am requesting that those posters that are posting here about the electrical work on this vehicle cease to do so from now on as these posts and my posts are messing up a very good engineering topic and I don't feel that is of benefit to anyone

Engineer1949 Please forgive me for what I have started, enjoy your engineering

Update - The below is from my most recent post as I am deleting all my electrical post's and in doing so am removing my part of the mess that I admit to being responsible for creating in this topic

I guess we could ask the Forum moderators to create a new topic and move the wiring part of this discussion into it, and put in a link or something. This would 'clean out' the original thread.

I would support that idea. Anyone else ?
Good idea, I will help out by deleting my post's from here

I have now removed my post's so as to help tidying up this topic, if a few other posters delete their post's the topic will be looking good again
